Charles Day to Direct Next Year’s News Conference

Charles Day news director of WGAR Cleveland will direct next year’s second annual Conference for Radio News Editors here in 1950. Day served on the advisory council for the first conference in June. This year’s conference was attended by more than 50 radio news editors from Ohio Michigan and Pennsylvania. Robert French WVKO Columbus was director. Executive secretary is Prof. Carleton J. Smyth head of Kent State’s radio journalism sequence.

Budget creates problem for university officials

Kent State University officials face a reduced two year budget of 4.948 million after a 12 percent cut by Ohio lawmakers. The university will open the second summer term as planned August 1 and resume classes August 2 with summer commencement September 2. President George A. Bowman says further cost cuts are not yet decided.

Charles trains for Lesnevich title bout in New York

Ezzard Charles, the NBA heavyweight champion, began training yesterday for his 15 round bout with Gus Lesnevich in Yan kee stadium on August 10. Also reports show 1 013 new infantile paralysis cases for the nation for the week ending July 16.

KSU Summer Choir Performs Bach Cantatas in July Program

Kent State University summer choir presents Bach cantatas at 8:15 p.m. in the university auditorium on Monday July 25. Soloists include Roland Patzer Peter Ulrich Evelyn Kolesar and Marjorie Barrett with Arlina Markussen on piano. University and Cleveland orchestras join under Walter Cerveny and Caro Carapetyan conducts.

Band Concert at Wills Gym Courts Tonight

A band and orchestra concert is held tonight at 7 15 on the Wills gym tennis courts featuring works by John Morrissey Tulane University music head. Karl Thurman international drum major champion demonstrates drum majoring as part of the Band orchestra clinic ending today. Public admission is free.

President Bowman Opens Yearly School Secretary Workshop

President George A. Bowman will open the university’s fifth annual workshop for school secretaries held July 25 to 29. Co-sponsored by the Ohio Association of Public School Employees, the event centers on a handbook for School Secretaries. Speakers include Vivienne Sumpter Dean White Hazel Messimore Michael Radock and topics on secretary roles, organization of supplies, qualifications and special skills.

Recital At KSU Next Wednesday By Patzer

Roland Patzer a junior in liberal arts will give a recital in the training school auditorium next Wednesday July 27 at 8 30 p m. He will be accompanied by Joan Fiocca on piano performing works by Handel Schubert Mozart Cilea and Rachmaninoff. Patzer a Shaw high school graduate class of 1945 East Cleveland and current voice major has won the Cleveland Singers club scholarship in 1948 and is active in Alpha Phi Beta Booster Music and Madrigal groups. Prof Caro Carapetyan is his voice instructor.

Announcements Available Again for September Graduates

September graduates who will not be here next quarter will be contacted by mail about cap and gown measurements. The university book store at 116 Merrill Hall will handle this. A meeting for September graduates is set for Monday July 25 at 3 30 p.m. in the auditorium to discuss a senior banquet and formal dance.
