Chicago hosts the national party convention as television brings live coverage to about 17.9 million homes in 64 cities. An army of 1,500 reporters and 2,000 behind the scenes staff cover every angle from defense to labor and women’s issues.
CBS correspondent Charles Collingwood predicts a drawn Democratic convention in Chicago with multiple candidates and no clear nominee. He notes President Truman will back a candidate he believes can win, likely Adlai Stevenson, while considering a draft. Discussions include Barkley or Rayburn as potential backers in case of deadlock.
The annual Kent State University band clinic will present two concerts at the tennis courts behind Wills gym Friday July 18 and a second concert Friday July 25. If rain occurs the event moves to Wills gym. Featured soloists include Hofstetter Bonebrake Motz Davis Keel Mayhew Parfitt Rossi Toot Hyerpe.
The Kent Stater announces its return in the first week of the second term and will publish every Thursday during the summer session. Barbara Pickering will succeed Joe Miller as editor in chief for the second term. The notice confirms nomination details.
Three freshmen from northeastern Ohio high schools receive Kent State journalism scholarships. Edward J. Nemecek of Lorain High School earns the first press photography scholarship, Carol Levens of Lakewood High School receives the NE Ohio Scholastic Press Association award, and George N. Smith of Killbuck High School wins the NE Ohio Weeklies Association annual prize. They will enter Kent State in the fall.
The Kent State University summer choir will present for the first time in Kent the Theresa Mass by Franz Joseph Haydn on Tuesday evening July 22 in the university auditorium. Directed by Robert Hull Foulkes the program features summer-school soloists Joan Morris Emma Lee Knippenberg Richard Davis and Roy Lewis with florid vocal lines and Italian operatic style.
All soloists are music teachers returning to study for master's degrees, except Miss Knip Penberg who recently graduated from Kent and joined the Lakewood school system. The choir includes members from Akron to Alliance with Mrs. Leslie J. Todd accompanying.
