In a state of the union address, President Roosevelt said American forces will fight across the British Isles Far East and oceans. He cited a total wartime cost of 56 000 000 000 and outlined 1942–43 production targets for planes tanks ships and anti air guns by year and total.
The War Department credited US planes flying the Rising Sun flag with at least two more destroyers sunk or crippled after sinking a destroyer and hitting a battleship. MacArthur’s forces faced a heavy air assault in the Philippines while Corregidor withstood bombardments. Chinese sources claim 40,000 Japanese troops trapped between the Laotao and Liuyang rivers in Hunan. Japan reported capturing Kauntan, a port about 190 miles from Singapore.
Russian forces claimed further gains on the western front as German troops retreat. Molotov said the allies would not rest until the German army was annihilated, signaling intensified wartime resolve.
The Industry of the United States concentrates on producing the vast program of materials President Roosevelt told Congress the nation would need to win the war against the axis. The message underscores the mobilization of industrial capacity for the war effort.

J H Vance of Akron assumes the new post of technical consultant at the University this week. His duties include surveying mechanical and electrical installations, recommending repairs, performing periodic inspections, and being on call for emergencies. He will draft a detailed operation and maintenance plan and will have an office in the administration building.
Former heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey, dining in a New York tavern, declared a desire to fight Schmeling and then went to army headquarters to enlist as a private at age 46, a move that could be refused by the military.
The 1942 campus social season starts with a New Year informal dance in Wills gym from 9 to 12, sponsored by the Men's Union and Women's League. Chick Floyd and his New York orchestra will play with Edith Caldwell as vocalist "the girl with the velvet blue voice." Admittance requires student activity cards.
Kent State University will host more than 60 Works Progress Administration recreation supervisors January 12 to 16. Dr. A. O. DeWeese announces five days of class observations demonstrations and university athletic events with talks by Harry Adams G J Altmann Joseph Begala Nick Carter and others.
Four off campus residences received top commendation from Miss Frances Maisch director of residences for best maintenance and housekeeping among 14 organized houses. Beta Gamma, Gamma Sigma Phi, Phi Beta Phi and the Journalism house earned the highest ratings with periodic inspections noted. A side-light showed Gamma Sigma Phi and Journalism are maintained by the same house cleaner.
Leonard Silverstein performed a dramatic reading titled The Button by Robert Newman during a WADC radio workshop. The program also featured two University band transcriptions The American Way and Our Director along with campus news by Tom Bates and Stan Mouse. Chi Pi program was postponed.
John W. Kaiser, mathematics instructor, will address the Math Club at 4 p m today in room 302 Merrill Hall. Gene Douglas, club president, will preside at the first meeting of 1942.
Dr. A C Poe announced that social dancing will resume tonight in Wills gym at seven o clock.
Dr. K C Leebrick president of the University will address students and faculty at 9 am in the auditorium on wartime responsibilities and university support. He denies any vote on reallocating funds for a recreation area behind Wills gym. Pledges of Cardinal Key and Blue Key will follow the talk.
Melvin Lwyman purchasing agent for B. F. Goodrich will address an industrial marketing class at the Nissley home 605 Pioneer Street Wednesday night at 7 30 p m. Robert Lee and Milton Cross supervise the program.
