University library hours during the holiday recess: open Friday December 27 10 am to 4 pm, Saturday December 28 10 am to noon, Friday January 3 10 am, Saturday January 4 10 am. Reserve books may be borrowed now through January 6, other books due January 6. sign full name on book cards. Science library McGilvrey hall closed for the recess.
Professor C Sheldon Van Deusen announced that Ford scholarship applications for junior and senior men will be ready by December 18 or 19. Four industrial arts majors will receive $300 scholarships to the Ford Training school with appointments set in the first week after Christmas vacation.
Dr. Harry Dean Wolfe notes that K Day activities offer business majors practice in selling and advertising while many College of Education students gain hands on experience. One third of participants are education majors and will study campaign operations for future classrooms.
Dr Gerbert G Lean head of Wooster college speech department will present Charles Dickens Christmas Carol on Tuesday December 17 at 8 15 pm in the university auditorium. Sponsored by the YMCA the program offers free admission. Lean has performed the piece for 32 years in about 500 shows. DeWitt Cox YM program chairman oversees the event.
The Photography club will meet at 7 o clock in room 111 Kent hall. Officers will be elected and plans for the future discussed. University men and women are invited to attend, per publicity chairman Don ald Beuey.
Kent graduates of the 1940 class have entered occupations from newspaper reporting to preaching. Thurman Artz, former Chestnut Burr editor, reports for Zepher Hills News in Florida. Dick Firth, popular man, serves as assistant pastor in Youngstown. Lois Bockhorst works as junior food supervisor at Marzetti’s in Columbus. Marvin Keller studies at a Playhouse in Cleveland. Kenneth Lowry is deputy recorder in Trumbull County. Alexander Papp is a chemist at Industrial Rayon in Painesville.
Prof E Turner head of the department of speech explained the technique of speakers in appealing to crowds at yesterday's psychology club meeting. His talk titled Emotions in Speech used Mark Anthony and Hitler as examples to illustrate crowd appeal.
Harold Schlegel announces that 66 Music club members will drive to Cleveland tonight. The group leaves the University at 7 p.m. for the Cleveland Music Hall where Serge Koussevitsky will conduct the Boston Symphony Orchestra at the Cleveland Auditorium.
President K C Leebrick reports that Kent may not see national social fraternities for about five years as the university seeks accreditation with the national inter-fraternity council. He notes that all houses would be state owned and rented, with plans ranging from separate fraternity houses to a single shared building to cut costs.
The present list of shut-ins includes Audrey Wells Gloria Brogneaux and Doris Pepper. Doris Pepper has been sent to her home in Youngstown for an appendicitis operation.
The registrar announces next semester schedules will be released a few days earlier. Registrar E C Stopher says the earlier release will let students plan and select courses more carefully.
Registrar P E C Stopher announced that the graduate council will meet at 4 p m today in the president's office to discuss new graduate credit courses and approve thesis topics for several graduate students.
Dean Mary L. Smallwood of the University social committee announces an all-University formal dance after finals. Students will vote in a Kent States poll on six to twelve bands and two possible dates January 31 or February 21. The event requires tuxedos for men and long gowns for women with a possible small student charge if costs exceed budget.
A university discussion by Raymond E. Manchester and Beacon Journal columnist Anthony Weitzel explores three genius classifications. Drs Cuber and Lemert note first group includes specialists like Edison, Toscanini, Paderewski, with high achievement in a field despite low formal schooling.
Three Kent State University students join James N. Holm's speech class to discuss What America Means to Me at 8 30. Participants are James Rybak Harold Thwaite and Betty Coombs. The program originates from WAKR Akron.
Dr Constantine J Alexopoulos associate professor of biology will address the Robinhood senior men at Tuesday noon on Greece In the Present Day Crisis He recently returned from Greece and narrowly missed the Greek draft Henry LaTorraca luncheon chairman endorses his qualifications for the talk
