Fire Destroys Car as Ravenna Student Attends Classes

Fire gutted William Pletzer’s car in Ravenna while he was in class. University traffic officials contended the car was not registered, despite the owner’s claim. Damage was estimated at $1000 with paint damage to a nearby car. Pletzer had owned the vehicle only a few weeks.

Professor Harris Returns From UCLA Study

Louis K. Harris assistant professor of political science returns from a year at the University of California Los Angeles where he studied Comparative Government with focus on Latin America He plans to teach Latin American Relations World Organization and introductory political science courses this fall at Kent State University.

Stater calls for aid as staff tightens

The Stater reports staffing shortages due to a drop in journalism students this term. The editor asks for students majoring in journalism or with writing experience to report to the Stater office at 115M after 1 p.m. on weekdays. Writers for feature or fiction work are also sought.

Bromfield Lecture Moves to August 29 at University

Louis Bromfield author and conservationist will speak at 8:30 p.m. in the university auditorium on Tuesday August 29, open to the public. Originally slated for August 15 the Mansfield farmer’s lecture appears after two prior events. Tibor Eckhardt will lecture August 8 and Ralph Hartzell will perform August 22, both at 8:30 p.m.

Kennan Piece Is Performed At Ravinia Festival

Kent Kennan, former KSU music instructor, presented his composition Night Soliloquy for flute and strings at the Ravinia festival in Illinois. A Wisconsin conservatory, Michigan, and Eastman graduate, he taught in 1939–40, with Night Soliloquy recorded by Victor and first performed in Rome in 1938 and in Rochester the same year.

New Trustee Appointed to KSU Board

Robert Guinther Akron attorney appointed by Governor Lausche to the Kent State University board of trustees, replacing the late Joseph Hanan. Guinther, Mt Gilead and Bucyrus high schools former teacher, is a Wooster College and University of Chicago Law School graduate and active civic leader. Other trustees include John R. Williams Madison Otto J. Korb East Cleveland Charles H. Lake Cleveland and Robert C. Dix Kent. Clyde Hissong state superintendent of public instruction also serves on the board.

Lecturer-Statesman Eckhardt to Speak Here Tuesday

Tibor Eckhardt European statesman and lecturer will lecture on America the Last Hope of the World August 8 in the university auditorium. He discusses fighting Communism in Europe since 1919 and his life among European political leaders and Hungarian reforms. The talk aims to alert American audiences to Communist dangers and is open to the public.

War impact on Kent State enrollment expected to rise

Dr. Charles E. Atkinson, Kent State registrar, notes that a major war could drastically affect enrollment, though current figures show little impact. Fall admissions exceed 1949, graduate enrollments rise, and second summer term nears 2,000 with masters students. Western Reserve University to offer refunds and credits for students entering military service effective September 18 across 11 WRU schools.

American Drive Set Back Near Pusan and Chinju

Communist flanking thrusts reversed an American counter-drive toward Pusan. The U S 24th division recaptured heights east of Chinju but withdrew under Red pressure. Reinforcements with more tanks rushed to aid as North Korea’s forces fight to push U S troops to the sea. Defense officials say 204 North Korean tanks have been destroyed in more than a month of fighting.
