Sen. Estes Kefauver has cancelled scheduled speeches in Ohio after being detained in Florida. The Tennessee presidential hopeful was to speak at the University auditorium this Friday and cannot fulfill planned appearances this week.
Students may mail applications to Educational Testing Service Princeton N J for the Selective Service college qualification test. Postmark deadline is May 10. Applicants can obtain blanks from their local board. Maj Gen Lewis B Hershey says the May 22 exam will be held at 1000 testing centers for those unable to take the December 13 or April 24 tests.
The Studio Theatre at 119 Kent opened Monday evening with Prof. E Turner Stump and colleagues in a ribbon cutting. Speeches praised the project as a step for the School of Speech with future plans for a dedicated building and theatre training.
Col. Irwin B. Anderson of the Air Force team praised the Kent wing as unusually good for a young group and lauded their progress during morning inspection and an afternoon parade. Col. McGrayne of the Army team called the corps excellent as about 700 cadets drilled and paraded for spectators, with a full crowd along the Commons.
The Penny Carnival moves outdoors for the first time, Saturday May 3 from 7 to 11 p.m. on the tennis courts behind Wills gym. About 24 groups compete for trophies with Blue Key and Cardinal Key sponsoring. Proceeds go to Stater, cancer and heart funds and a Key scholarship. Admission 10 cents, concessions from one cent. If rain, event moves to Wills gym. Co chairs Vern Roberts and Mary C Newberry.
Three former Kent State University students Julius Campetto 18 Lewis Trivissono 20 and Louis Sabetta 20 all of Cleveland were found guilty of assault and battery in Portage County Common Pleas court for an incident Feb 13 near 205 University Drive Kent. The youths were fined 25 and costs and 60 days jail with bond posted pending appeal. Andrew Velore 19 was acquitted.
