A society style scene unfolds at the sophomore hop as Lovely Jane Rothermund and Dick Firth are presented as the most popular man and woman. The event features trumpets, mellow lights, and a formal walk to the microphone signaling the couple’s election as the top pair.
Bob Kenyon announced the Sophomore hop would be informal with no formal or semi formal dress. He added that boys must wear suits and sweaters will be prohibited.
The current school year features a dance at Wills gym Saturday night with Dick Barrie and his orchestra. The 1940 popular couple will be crowned with past title holders attending. Janet Foltz plans the event with Dave Snyder and Jim Griffin sending invitations. Expect about 250 couples. tickets available at the Atrium, Kent Restaurant, or from sophomores.
Kent State University sent eleven performers to the Ohio College Band Association meeting at Baldwin Wallace College. Guest conductor Glen Cliff Bainum praised the Kent group as the finest he had conducted. Players receiving high ratings included John Salomone Preston Springer and Bill Thompson with others named.
Fifty eight Kent State men registered at the beards contest booth for a 10 day shrubbery growing race ending at the April 26 dance. Men classify themselves by beard styles and compete for an engraved cup chosen by a judges’ panel based on thickness length beauty or color.
Dr. H. D. Byrne head of political science has completed an objective business law test for certifying high school teachers. The test will be administered under Ray G. Wood, director of Ohio Scholarship Tests for Ohio, in several large cities in the state.
Louis B. Seltzer editor in chief of The Cleveland Press and Scripps-Howard papers will judge Ohio college newspaper entries for OCNA awards. Trophies stand 16 inches high for best daily weekly and bi weekly papers. Winners announced April 26 at OCNA banquet. second place certificates noted. Seltzer urged papers inform students report past events discuss campus problems and include engaging human interest stories.
About 250 fraternity men attended the Interfraternity Council banquet at Lowry hall as educational week activities, with Kappa Mu Kappa winning the fraternity song trophy after a four way tie. Delta Phi Sigma and Sigma Tau Gamma also scored highly, while Kappa Sigma Chi took the attendance trophy with 75 percent of members present.
Myron B. Smith of the Library of Congress lectured on Near Eastern architecture and art in yesterday’s assembly. His slides preview an exhibit this week with costumes rugs tapestries tiles and slides shown in 307M through Thursday from 3 to 5 pm and 7 30 to 9 pm.
Senior class invitations are on display in the Atrium glass bulletin boards and may be ordered from committee members beginning next Monday through May 1. The committee, led by Don Scullion, will take orders at a table in the Atrium. Invitations must be paid for upon order. A sample omits the graduation time of 10 o'clock, which will appear on the final invites. Committee members include Pat Fuller Claire Jane Wagstaff Jack McGurk and Al Kieselbach.
Stubby Sindledecker and his Jolly Four became the axis of campus dances after the university launched country dance events. He learned caller skills in West Virginia and recalls dancing for neighbors when money was tight. Students now prefer fast square dancing, with Stubby still in demand at high school events.
Mike Dubransky wins the Kentopic contest sponsored by The Kent Stater for his idea to promote a Kent State Get Acquainted day. The prize is two free passes to Schine's Kent Theatre, awarded to first place winners twice weekly. Martha Raye stars in The Farmer's Daughter and Charles Laughton in Sidewalks of London play at Schine's Kent Theatre today.
Laura DiCola and Bob Schaat star in Mother Carey’s Chickens, Kent State training school senior class play directed by Miss Blanche. The humorous tragedy follows an officer’s widow and her four chicks as the family adapts to life after loss. Tickets available at the training school.
