An urgent appeal asks readers to donate books for recently enrolled veterans. A Stater representative will collect books next week Monday through Friday from 11 am to 1 pm in the editor's office. Roy Newsome of the K-Vets will manage the books-for-vets drive, offering loans or sales plus owner details and value on the inside cover.

John R. Montgomery director of the university speech and hearing link named official pronouncer for the 19th annual Akron Beacon Journal spelling bee. Frances B. Murphey, a Kent State graduate, named spelling bee editor for the Beacon Journal.
The sociology department head was chosen by the faculty to deliver the Honors Day convocation address on May 23. Honors Day recognizes Kansas State University students for outstanding scholastic work. Engleman awards in education and creative writing are presented at this event.
Delays in veteran benefits arise due to irregularities in the U S Treasury office in Cleveland. Coordinator Dewey Barich says checks will be delivered within three days after a VA call.
Assistant Professor James N. Holm will receive an honor from the Ohio Association of College Teachers of Speech at a Columbus luncheon. The recognition cites his recent book How to Judge Speech Contests. Holm serves as association secretary.
All new students and others who have not had the required speech and hearing tests should report to Room 316 Kent Hall for appointment.
Student allocators submitted budgets totaling 11579.25 and were told only about 7000 may be available. The allocations committee approved a percentage system and will reconvene next Tuesday at 4 p m after the treasurer provides full funds. Tom Gavagan of the Kent States urged funds for three issues weekly to support the Stater.
The Stater is being sent to numerous high schools on request of the athletic department. Gavagan notes the effort aims to shape minds of future Kent Staters by promoting campaigns, campus lawn conditions, veterans' books procurement, and encouraging high school students to visit Kent State.
President George A. Bowman announced Lowry hall's west wing will host a daily study hall and lunchroom from 9 to 11 a.m. and 1:30 to 4 p.m. for commuters. Dean Ada V. Hyatt and Dean Raymond E. Manchester issued five rules covering cleanliness, no smoking, quiet during study, coat racks, and use of the front entrance.
Twenty men will join a 67 voice choir for a second WHEC Canton radio broadcast from 5 10 to 5 30 Sunday. Caro Carapetyan assistant professor of music will lead the group in the radio broadcast and in a vesper service at St Pauls Lutheran church in Massillon at 7 30 that evening. The choir adds two new song groups.
Dormitory students who have not applied for canning sugar ration stamps No. 9 may pick them up Thursday Apr 11 from 9 to 11 a m and 12 30 to 4 p m at the dietitian's office in the west dining hall Head Dietitian Eleanor E Hruby said today This is the last time the stamp will be given out Miss Hruby emphasized.
Alice Marble, renowned tennis champion and fashion designer, will speak to an assembly on Tuesday April 9 at 10 a.m. She recounts her recovery from supposed invalidism to win six national titles and be named Outstanding Woman Athlete of 1939. Big Bill Tilden praised her peak surpassing Wills Moody and Lenglen.
Hulbert House association will handle NTFC publicity with Roy Newsome in charge. The group plans to promote NTFC stock sales to fraternities and sororities and manage ticket publicity. Assistants include William Becherer Harold Osseroff George Gilbert Doug Phillips and Bernard Sharkey. Individual purchases remain possible through Newsome Friedland or Dave Ryan.
Librarian John B. Nicholson Jr. speaks before the Ohio Library Association in Cleveland on uses of microfilm in the special library. The speech will appear in the Special Libraries Bulletin and his article on new library science courses will run in the April 15 Library Journal.
Kent State radio airs an adaptation of Nathaniel Hawthorne's Ethan Brand at 11 15 a m Saturday on WAKR. Sophomore Geraldine Petzel wrote the script detailing a man in search of the unpardonable sin. Cast includes Harold Kelsey Dave Ryan Warren Lashley and Chuck Hoover with sound effects by Felice Faust and Arloeen Book.
The university debate team secured first place at the Northeastern Ohio Debate Conference annual tournament held last week at Western Reserve University in Cleveland. The affirmative team of Jeanne Cook and Dave Ryan won six of eight debates, with the negative team of Matthew Bradley and Ray Farr also succeeding.
A bulletin lists prospective graduates from the college of education. Dean John L. Blair requests any senior missing from the list to see him about credits.
Delegates attending the Northeastern Home Economics conference visit the campus today. Miss Ann McManus from East Ohio Gas Company in Cleveland is the guest speaker representing the sponsor.
