Senators Douglas Taft Lucas push for curbing deficit and balancing the budget. Douglas calls inflation a serious threat and favors tighter spending, while Taft vows a tough senate drive to cut appropriations and reduce government outlays to slow inflation.
A Chicago and Milwaukee passenger train collided with a stalled semi-trailer near Morton Grove Illinois causing the engine to catch fire. Engineer Henry Kuhn 67 and fireman Clifford Eberhardt 37 were burned and hospitalized while passengers were unharmed. The truck driver Nick De Salvo 25 and two helpers escaped injuries. The five coach Traveler runs between Chicago and Milwaukee and the crash occurred at 8 50 a m CST.
Harold E. Stassen, president of the University of Pennsylvania, was awarded an honorary Doctor of Law degree at Princeton University's 203rd annual commencement exercises in Princeton, New Jersey.
Army Secretary Frank Pace Jr said in Louisville that the opportunity for world peace is greater now than since the last war. He cautioned that while there is no immediate prospect of war, conditions could change any time and pull the nation into conflict.
Thunderstorms and heavy rains swept Wisconsin overnight. Burlington recorded 5.09 inches while Madison 3.26, Racine 3.16, Milwaukee 3.13, and Kenosha 2.86. La Crosse area power and telephones were knocked out. a Lake Geneva power line failed. High winds disrupted service for six hours. later, partly cloudy skies and little temperature change expected. 1 pm temperature in Kenosha was 70.
Kenosha recorded 2.86 inches of rain in a single day, the highest in a decade, with 1.45 inches falling per hour during a half hour from 1:30 to 2 a.m. The downpour caused basements to flood, street ponding, clogged catch basins, and widespread debris. Lightning struck Paul Kleinschmidt's home at 6322 29th Ave., causing soot damage but no fire.
London reports Britain's fresh meat ration will be reduced by 12 percent starting Sunday. Each person may buy the equivalent of 18 cents weekly as drought reduces meat shipments from Argentina. Meat supply officials say the drought has disrupted imports.
The senate house atomic committee discussed a larger expansion of the A bomb and H bomb programs in a closed door meeting with the atomic energy commission. A pilot chemical processing plant in Vermillion county Indiana could trigger a 5 000 000 outlay to expand operations.
Senator George of Georgia leads debate on a revised social security bill to extend coverage to about 9.9 million more people and raise payments. The plan would boost monthly benefits, simplify eligibility, and create a future doubling of benefits while preserving current taxes until 1956.
William Milasky part owner of the Pioneer News Service testified before a Senate crime inquiry that race news distribution in St Louis is not controlled by gangsters or criminals. Milasky said the claim is false and defended his business as legitimate. The committee plans further testimony as President Truman mulls executive access to tax and government data on suspected underworld figures.
Washington reports the United States granted political asylum to Vladimir Houdek former Czechoslovak representative at the United Nations. Houdek quit May 16 and sought asylum saying he could not accept Communist methods used against eastern European nations including Czechoslovakia.
Fred Jackson, 54, a Sparta taxi driver, died early today after his cab was struck at a Milwaukee road crossing by a troop train bound for Camp Williams on Saturday.
New York official Remington, a former commerce official, pleads not guilty to a one count perjury charge for denying before a federal grand jury that he was a communist. Judge Clancy sets July 5 trial date and $5,000 bail with two days to post.
The first encampment of the Wisconsin Department of the Grand Army of the Republic proceeds in Sheboygan with no member present. Lansing A. Wilcox, Cadott’s last Civil War veteran, age 104, unable to attend. Memorial rites mark the opening program.
Air France reported most passengers and crew perished after a C-54 Skymaster ditched in the Persian Gulf near Bahrein. Of 51 aboard, six survived or were seriously injured, with 39 still missing, including one infant. The Karachi to Cairo flight was en route when forced down three miles off Bahrein island.
Chicago based Lustron Corpora tion of Columbus Ohio was ordered into voluntary bankruptcy by Federal District Judge Philip L. Sullivan. Three receivers named to take over assets are Arthur P. Murphy S Harvey Klein and James B McCahey Jr all Chicago. The Reconstruc tion Finance corporation petition was denied and a Columbus federal foreclosure order was not allowed to stand. A consent to involuntary bankruptcy was filed by attorney Joseph B Schwartz.
Fire destroyed the Wheelock furniture store in Rock Falls Illinois as firefighters from five towns struggled to save neighboring buildings. Lightning struck the 60 year old two story brick building around 5 20 a m setting the blaze. E G Wheelock partners estimate losses over 100 000 with water damage to an adjacent variety store about 5 000.
The world's largest helicopter the Cierva Air Horse built to carry 24 passengers crashed during a test flight near Southampton airport. All three crew members died and a witness reported one rotor broke off in midair before the craft plummeted toward a farm and burned.
Ford Motor Co delivered the last of ten specially built Lincoln Cosmopolitan convertibles to the White House for President Truman. The seven passenger limo features cherry red and black leather, disappearing steps for security, and a 145 inch wheelbase, with title remaining with Ford under lease.
Danbury Connecticut former Representative J Parnell Thomas of New Jersey has applied for parole from the federal correctional institution in Danbury.
Madison City Manager Leonard G. Howell plans to resign tonight to take a similar post in Des Moines Indiana. Senator McKellar collapses and recovers after leaving the senate chamber in Washington. A violent electrical storm causes damage in northeastern Illinois including a stable fire near St Charles and a Chicago streetcar with several homes damaged. Thirteen horses perished in the stable fire. Democrats urge President Truman to veto the basing point bill before the midnight Friday deadline.
