Floodwaters from the Columbia River breach a dike near Portland threatening the 64 million dollar airport and Reynolds Metals plant at Troutdale. Evacuations expanded as Army engineers warned of ten to twelve foot inundation and renewed orders across Kelso and Lower Columbia districts. The Vanport tragedy backdrop, with deaths at four, looms over continued evacuations and cross dike failures.
Four American patrolmen risked their lives to rescue more than 100 Japanese civilians from a burning seven story dance hall in downtown Tokyo. Jennifer Holt testified that her husband William R Bakewell kept all her earnings and refused medical payment. The 26 year old daughter of Jack Holt said she had to hand over her money and feared the marriage would end if she did not. They married September 29 1946 and separated last March.
Evangeline Starr as justice of the peace ordered Ben Trigg to chain himself to a tree in his front yard or serve six months in county jail after his wife testified to abuse during drunken episodes. Trigg said he blacks out when intoxicated. His wife defended him as a good husband otherwise.
A school bus carrying twenty two children to close the semester was struck by a sandy truck in Van Nuys California. The truck driver died and twenty two children sustained injuries none of which were serious.
London June 11 AP A 66 percent purchase tax on fur garments clocks and certain radios was cut to 33 percent today. The 100 percent tax on gas heaters was reduced to 66 percent. The cuts reflect in increased supplies of goods.
