Governor Stevenson pressed for no tax increases while Weaver Baker trimmed spending to save money. New laws include legalized chiropraxy, anti loan shark measures, labor union controls, and a river authority statute.
Arrangements are under way for a blood plasma trip to San Antonio on May 25. The caravan will depart Cozy Coffee Shop by seven in the morning and travelers should not eat after six. Those who did the first trip are eligible again, and the effort aims to aid combat duty men. A junction booth will offer information Saturday afternoon on the Streets of Junction.
London Public School holds commencement as Rev Lewis J Wilkins is invited to address the graduating class Friday evening. Governor Coke Stevenson spoke Thursday, recalling his boyhood ties to the community and the students.
Plans are under way for Vacation Bible School at the Baptist Church starting with a Preparation Day and parade on June 5. Classes run two weeks from June 7, three hours daily, Monday through Friday. Open to children aged three through sixteen with Bible study, handwork, singing, games and picnics.
Intelligence Clerk James Ben Liverman enlisted March 30 1942 and began duty August 1 at Kelly Field later moving to Sheppard Field August 17 1942. He attended AAFTS at Fort Logan from September 16 for two months then joined 312th Bomb Group Hunter Field Savannah as chief clerk in personnel. He trained in Louisiana briefly February 4 1943 and transferred to Rice California. He holds sergeant rank.
The grammar school holds its closing exercises tonight in the high school auditorium. Seventy students receive certificates as 38 boys and girls perform processional, class songs, and diplomas under the program led by Supt. Rothmann and Rev. Bohmfalk and Hall.
REA field rep B. W. Chesser told Waco officials W. O. Dickerson and W. W. Gregory that Rural Electrification in Kimble County is held up mainly by the war. He urged depositors to keep their funds in place while projects await status updates.
John Allen Liverman, a machinist second class in the Sea Bee Unit of the U.S. Construction Battalion attached to the Marine Corps, entered the Naval Reserve on April 3 1942 and began training in Houston Norfolk and Davis Rhode Island. He sailed from Norfolk September 19 1942 reaching Guadalcanal after three months at sea and has served in the Guadalcanal area for several months and is now in the South Pacific.
Commencement services for nine graduates of Harper High School were held in Bevns Hall Sunday evening with Rev. A. A. Gitter delivering the sermon. A large audience attended as the hall was decorated with spring flowers and the community choir sang an anthem.
The brutal killing of Jesus Cerda captain of a Kerrville sheep shearing crew was solved by State Ranger Gully Consert Kerr County Sheriff Frank Moore and other officers including Mitchell McLendon. One black man and seven Mexicans were arrested and jailed. all signed statements. Cerda died with over 400 dollars on him. some money recovered. Cerda had just returned from a trip to San Saba County the day before the slaying.
R. E. McKay suffered painful injuries when a cow stepped on his foot two weeks ago. He has been confined to his room but is improving slowly.
Gov Coke Stevenson spoke to the Junction High Senior Class about character and leadership, tracing lines from Shakespeare to Hitler and Gandhi with George Washington as a model. The program included invocations, salutatory by Joanna Smith, valedictory by Fane Burt, diplomas, awards, and honor society announcements. The senior class list and award recipients were read by Supt Rankin Kothmann, Principal A L Peay, and Mr Jesse Ball.
H H Lawler is installing a water system at his Cleo ranch with water piped one and a half miles from a spring via two inch pipe. The spring lies 75 feet above the house and he expects ample supply for garden, pool and yard. L L Hall left Tuesday for a business trip to Arkansas hoping fishing improves on return.
Dick Davee tops Kimble County bass reports with a five and a half pound record catch. Several smaller bass are reported as the season continues. readers are asked to report any larger fish caught to date.
