Proper Feed for Ewes in Winter Months
Experiments show legume hays like alfalfa and clover best sustain pregnant ewes through winter. Legume hay should be the basic sheep feed, especially when pasture is poor or unavailable. Ewes fed only legume roughage produce healthy lambs and remain vigorous and productive. early lambing ewes stay healthy.
Feeding dairy cows before lambing time in high condition
A Southland Farmer note advises maintaining abundant legume hay water and salt during late pregnancy with ample exercise. Some breeders feed grain at about half a pound daily near lambing to stimulate milk, favoring corn for average condition with alfalfa or clover hay, or a mix of corn and oats with bran. Corn silage and succulent feeds may help pregnant ewes with good results.
