Chamber forms committee to study store awnings

A Chamber of Commerce board appoints Louis Joseph W M Moore Clay Secrest and Ramsey Randolph to study merits and prices of store front awnings. They will report at the March 10 meeting. The Texas Chamber of Commerce Magazine praises the awning improvement effort and Seamons notes Flying M Ranch joins with a $30 membership.

Stock Show Winners Named In Kimble County

The Kimble County Stock Show announced results across divisions. In sheep Billy Ed McCollum London 4-H placed in fat lambs medium wool and crossbred singles. In poultry Bobby Jetton 4-H earned a $1 premium for the only capon. In goats Albert Lane Hodges placed second in billy kid C type and third in nanny kid C type. Edward Rothmann took the remaining two first places in each division.

Local Scouts Hold Camp for Troop 20

The Longhorn Patrol won the Troop 20 Boy Scout camping contest at the Scout grounds. Jimmy Harriss led the winning patrol with Sammy Kindrick as assistant leader. Rattlesnake Patrol under Tilden Stewart finished second and Panthers, the third patrol, also participated. Frank Hubbell and John Dagen organized tests and activities. sixteen boys attended the two day event with Friday and Saturday schedules covering supper, stunts, advancement discussions, pioneering, safety, mapping, cooking and judging.

Leap Year Marriages Lag as February Counts Decline

February vital statistics show fewer marriages than last year with Kennon Stapp recording two below the monthly average. Births reached eight, one death recorded, and four divorce decrees granted. Julius Murr, hospitalized for eye treatment, visited by Mrs. Murr a measles patient.

The Burt M. Fleming Post of the American Legion will hold a regular meeting Friday night at 8 o clock in the Legion Hut. Commander W G Chadwell announced the gathering and urged all members to attend.

Junction Independent School District to Hold March 6 Election

Voters in the expanding Junction Independent School District will ballot March 6 in Kimble County for tax equalization and bonded indebtedness of newly annexed districts. Polls open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Kimble County Courthouse for Junction and nine adjoining districts including Murr and James River. Edgar McLendon presides. clerks are Mrs. McLendon and Mrs. D. F. Davee.

Gray Ladies Training School at Legion Draws Local Interest

Gray Ladies Training School to be held at Legion opens to local women 35 and older. Mrs. W. E. Allen urges enrollment for March 9 or 11 with plans for 3 p m meeting at the courthouse to finalize attendance as Red Cross volunteers increase to assist Legion Hospital patients and sick boys.

Jack Price was elected president of the Junction Volunteer Fire Department and Jimmie Simmons was re elected fire chief. Leon R. REA Announces Rate Changes for Hot Water Heaters

REA announces new rates effective February 20 affecting customers using hot water heaters. Chester Kirk, Kimble Electric Coop manager, noted the change this week. The rate change will appear on March 20 statements.

Horace Busby to Lead Eight Day Series at College Street Church

Fort Worth evangelist Horace Busby, famed for 37 sermons a month over 37 years, will begin an eight day series at College Street Church of Christ. He previously led three meetings for the church in 1940, and his teaching style emphasizes Bible study over oratory. Services are 11:00 a m. Sunday and 2:30 and 7:30 p m. weekdays March 7 to 15 with a basket luncheon on the Sundays.

Pioneer Citizen W. C. Joy dies at 91 in Roosevelt

W. C. Joy known as Uncle Dock died Monday at 6 a m after three weeks illness at his Roosevelt home. Services were held Tuesday at 2 a m at the Roosevelt Presbyterian Church with Rev. Louis Pearl officiating. He was born November 17, 1856 near Little Rock Arkansas and arrived in Texas in 1860. The Kimble pioneer leaves a widow and large family with five children deceased, 11 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild. Burial in Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Inter County Federation Luncheon Features Mrs Perkins Speaker

Funeral services for W. C. Bradshaw held Feb 23

Funeral services for W. C. Bradshaw, longtime Kimble ranchman and last surviving charter member of the College Street Church of Christ, were held Monday at Abilene College Church of Christ with Elder Hugh Clark presiding. Burial followed Tuesday in Comanche cemetery. Survived by widow Ada Cowsett Bradshaw, daughter Mrs. Hart Shoemaker of Abilene, sons Awbrey of Fort Worth and Roy of Sedalia, Col., two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Bowling Carnival Marks First Anniversary at Local Center

A two weekend bowling carnival planned in April marks the first anniversary of the B and W Bowling Center. Co owner R D Borden says events include handicap singles rag time doubles and mixed doubles with 240 singles entries expected and about 150 awarded as prize money plus trophies.

At least six Kimble residents marked a Leap Year birthday anniversary on a fifth Sunday. Grady Wallace leads at 88, youngest is Mrs. Eddith Farris at 8. All five missed a 1900 birthday, as the calendar notes the century skip and a fifth Sunday Leap Day occurs every 28 years.

School Students Entertain Lions at Hotel Las Lomas

A school band directed by Miss Gwendolyn LaRue performed at a Lions Club luncheon on Wednesday February 25 at Hotel Las Lomas. Red Cross Drive Nets $650 in First Two Days

The Red Cross campaign, led by chairman Louis Joseph, raised $650 toward a $1,000 county quota in two days. Volunteers canvassed residential areas while city booths prepare on Main Street Saturday to boost contributions. Community praise went to women’s clubs and courthouse and downtown workers including Albert Martinez Jr and named volunteers.

Mrs Guyton Lewis Rites Held in London

Funeral services for Mrs. Guyton Lewis 78 who died in London Sunday Feb 22 were held Feb 23 at the London Baptist Church. The widow of a former London postmaster she had lived in London 40 years and was a church member. Survivors include a daughter Mrs Ledford Williams Burleson Texas a son Henry Wichita Falls 12 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Wilbur Dunk Continues FFA Speaking Tours Across Texas

Wilbur Ray Dunk vice president of the FFA ended a trip to east Texas where he helped round up goats for shearing and then traveled to West Texas for boys livestock shows. He met Area II supervisor W E Williams in San Angelo and visited the Robert Lee Nolan County and San Angelo shows this week. He spoke to 1,000 attendees at the Area VI FFA meeting in Commerce and contacted 1,100 more across six district meetings in Arlington Garland Paris Deport Princeton and McKinney. He awarded the Lone Star Farmer Degree to Bill Bradfield at Garland Rotary and spoke on four radio programs including KNAF Fredericksburg on February 19.
