Kimble Boys In Service Update From Junction Eagle

The Junction Eagle lists service news for local men including Weldon W. Phillips overseas, Bud Foster returning from the Aleutians, Frank Jackson at Camp Gruber after furlough, and Joe Goodman stationed in San Diego. Also noted are Loujina Hernandez at Great Bend Army Air Base with brothers in service, Max Camp posting letters from an unknown location, Belton Tatsch in India since January 1943, Melvin Schreyer killed in a Montana air base crash, Denman Ake training at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, and Jake Andrews discharged after service including time at Camp Adair Yakima and Fort Lewis.

Mrs Browning Sails for Oklahoma Visit

Mrs Ethel Browning left Saturday to visit her brother Rev Oren Reid and family in Lawton Oklahoma. Mrs W T Bishop returned Tuesday from San Angelo where she stayed with Mrs George France while George, ill in hospital, has undergone three operations and is improving.

New $5 Auto Tax Stamps Due June 30

Automobile owners are warned by the Internal Revenue Division that it will be illegal to operate cars after June 30 without $5 Use Tax stamps for the 1944 fiscal year. The stamps, third in the series, are sold at post offices and Internal Revenue offices. Post offices sell cash on the counter, stamps may be bought by mail from Internal Revenue offices.

Local Rotary Club Begins 16th Year in Junction

The Junction Rotary Club enters its 16th year with Rankin Kothmann as president for 15th year, starting July 1. Officers include Lewis Wilkins vice president John M Hawkins secretary R H Loeffler treasurer and other directors. Charter members date to June 28 1928 and five remain as the club marks 15 years of continuity with John M Hawkins holding a flawless attendance record.

Signal Corps Jesse Carroll Enlists at Fort Sam Houston

Jesse Carroll son of J W Carroll of Cleo Texas enlisted in the U S Armed Forces at Fort Sam Houston San Antonio Texas on January 17 1941 He was assigned to Headquarters Company 23rd Infantry He trained at Fort Sam Houston until September 23 1942 and was then transferred to Camp McCoy Wisconsin where he has trained since He is among more than 460 Knox County boys serving their country.

Red Cross Sponsors Third Trip To San Antonio Friday

The Junction Eagle reports new and prior contributors to the Red Cross blood plasma campaign from Kimble County. Elder W M Speck Roy Borden Mrs H S Taylor and Mrs Flem Felps donated blood for the second time. First time donors include W C Oliver Floyd Little Clarence Self Mrs A L Peay Mrs Chester Bannowsky Mrs J T Swanson and Mrs Anna Mae Sheppard. Cash contributors are W O Dickerson Buddy Harte Ed Hunger and Mrs Ben Neal. Mrs Lottie Bolt supplied a car for the trip. Roy Borden says another San Antonio trip will be weeks away and the Eagle will announce plans. Jim Massie of Austin visited Junction over the weekend.

Gunnery Corporal Roe Advances in 7th Army Air Forces

Nolan Roe entered the Armed Forces on March 2 1942 at Fort Bliss Texas. After four months training at Sheppard Field Wichita Falls he moved to Glendale California for advanced training. He is promoted to Corporal and serves with the 7th Army Air Forces Bomb and Gunnery Squadron at Muroc California. He had lived in Kimile County four years before enlistment.

Junction Soldier Traps Desert Camel With Rope in North Africa

Pfe Warren Grady of Junction Texas, serving with a Ninth Air Force signal unit in the Middle East, roped a fast camel named Mushquais after a challenge from Arabic owners. Grady leapt onto a truck hood and looped a lariat, stopping the beast as the driver neared, drawing cheers and humorous praise despite Mushquais being labeled a troublemaker by locals.

Revival Meeting Underway At Junction Tabernacle

Evangelist R. M. Autry opened a revival at Junction Tabernacle four blocks north of Kimble Courts on June 23 with events each evening at nine. Pastor B. E. Baker oversees plans. Mr. and Mrs. Dick Davee and daughters left for Temple for hospital treatment after a week in bed.

Loeffler Graduates From A and M College In 1942

In Motorized Division Victor Loeffler son of Mr and Mrs R H Loeffler graduated from A and M College on May 16 1942 and entered the Armed Forces the next day. He trained at Camp Wolters Texas and Camp Gordon Georgia with the 22nd Inf Reg Army Division and later underwent commando training. He is now at Fort Dix New Jersey undergoing further training.

Gully Cowsert Promoted Captain of Texas Rangers Unit

Gully Cowsert, now captain of a Texas Rangers company stationed at Alice, Texas, earned recognition for a year of service. His work extended from Del Rio to Brownsville and along the coast to Corpus Christi, aiding in breaking cattle rustling rings and solving murders.

Air Corps Weldon Deck Enlists and Serves Abroad

Air Corps recruit Weldon Deck son of Mr and Mrs Clyde Deck enlisted August 3 1933 at Randolph Field aged 19. He served at Randolph Moffett Hamilton March Field and arrived in Australia February 1 1942. Now stationed in India holding rank of first lieutenant. His wife is mentioned.

Whitworth Pioneer Ranchman Dies at Kimble County Ranch

W H Whitworth died at his ranch home on June 19 after illness. Funeral services were held June 21 with Rev Paul S Van Dyke officiating. interment in Junction Cemetery. Survived by wife Mary Margaret Rogers and 12 children, 20 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, sister Margaret Thompson, brother Robert Whitworth, six half brothers, and numerous relatives.

Sumpter Opens New Grocery Store and Service Station

H Sumpter opens a new grocery store and service station in Junction one block west of Kimble Courts in the Mason Building. The store will open Friday June 25 with a stock of groceries including items not readily available. Sumpter, a five year Junction resident, previously managed Piggly Wiggly before moving to work in a defense plant at McGregor Texas due to TNT fumes. He invites friends to visit the new store.

C T Holekamp honored Scout officials and the financial drive teams last week. The barbecue was served at his camp house on the Duderstadt ranch. Barbecued meat with all the accessories complemented the event.
