Municipal actions target utility firms after failures to pay taxes. The UP Phone Company owes the city $2,000 in taxes, triggering official proceedings and enforcement steps. The conflict centers on unpaid municipal dues and regulatory response.
Public property committee reported unfavorably on a petition from J. D. Strutzer Automobile Co. to place a gasoline tank on the sidewalk. Communications and claims were referred to relevant committees. Actions included approving machinery final estimate for the Van Buren street well and payroll, and preparing ordinances on franchise annulment for Interstate Telephone Co. and opinions on Chicago Telephone and Public Service franchise validity.

New York December 8 Andrew Carnegie the wealthiest steel magnate and library builder declared that money never bothers him as it does John D Rockefeller. He said he seldom thinks of wealth unless penniless and checkbookless and then it worries him a little. He added I have enough to keep me from returning to the telegraph key and that is satisfactory.
Startling developments follow the Davidson Woods arrest of five suspects. A woman claimed to be Mrs Charles Poole but confessed to Sheriff Thomas Stevenson she is Fannie Widie and not married. She said she traveled with a man using a fictitious name who admitted desertion from the army.
Congressman Ira C. Copley of the Eleventh Illinois district tops Illinois lawmakers for absence in the recent special session, missing 55 roll calls. Congressman Hexworth of Southern Illinois tallied 64 days absent due to illness and is on leave.
Edward Lawless faced a woman’s claim of desertion from the army. His face blanched and he asked the sheriff to summon the deputy United States marshal. He refused to admit the charge.

Anthony Weirschein 28 a well known Lockport resident and Illinois Steel Co inspector of valves died after an air valve exploded in the machine shop. He was unconscious at Silver Cross hospital and coroner ordered an inquest at 9 this morning. No others were injured. The body went to Goodale Undertaking.
Continuances were granted yesterday by Justice Goodspeed in Chicago and Joliet Street Railway cases. Twenty conductors are charged with misappropriating funds. The continuance was requested due to absence of attorney Eneshia Meers who is in Texas. Cases reset for one week.
