A Hopkins bakery led small bakers petition the city council to end middle men and sell direct one pound loaves at four cents. They claim higher profits and lower living costs for consumers, while large bakers oppose reducing loaf size. The council faces a heated debate with both sides present.
For the seventh time in three years the Fred Johnson saloon at 421 Collins street was broken into Saturday night. Thieves stole 13.40 in cash and a large quantity of brandy and cigars, leaving the bar with a half full bottle and two glasses. Police led by Sergeant Beck and Captain Corcoran found an open rear doorway and evidence of a robbery, with the proprietor vowing to keep a shotgun ready after seven prior break ins with no arrests.
Mrs Pankhurst is released after three days in Exter jail where she endured a prolonged hunger and thirst strike. She is taken to a local hospital suffering from pleurisy and rest.
Mrs George L Bushnell of 900 North Street Rochester appeals to police after her husband left September 7 to seek a new home. A postcard from Chicago says he was en route to Joliet with no stated reason, prompting a citywide search and inquiries at local plants.
The Truby company resumes operations today as a coal feed and grain dealer. Henry Truby, long associated with the Truby Grain company, leads the new firm at the old Truby stand on South Center Street. Chief of Police Martin Murphy warns crowds downtown during Christmas shopping to guard pocketbooks after Henry Hammerquist reports his wallet stolen from his vest at the Independent Five and Ten store. Hammerquist, 609 Clinton street, says four young men jostled him.
A westward blizzard over Denver snuffs spring signs as Joliet records a sharp temperature drop from above 50 to 46 at 1 am. The cold wind from the northwest brings heavy coats and furs back into use after a week of milder weather.
In Calumet Michigan three copper miners were killed and a young woman fatally wounded during an early morning attack on a non union boarding house. Six suspects are in custody Arthur James 21 Harry James 24 Thomas Bailey 41 named as attackers. Citizens alliance meeting urged Sheriff Gruise to remove strike agitators or face other actions.
Flood waters hit Wharton and Eagle Lake with at least 91 dead and many unaccounted for. Housetops crowd with evacuees as rescue boats are unavailable. bodies found near Bryan and Hearne as the toll climbs.
John Seravitz was attacked from behind near a saloon on Indiana Street just before midnight. A knife wound to the head severed two arteries, but Dr. F W Stanton stopped the bleeding and the injured man was taken to St Joseph's hospital. Bartender Michael Rupe was arrested nearby and held as the investigation continues.
Chicago magnate Montgomery Ward founder of a major mail order business died at his Highland Park home at age seventy. He rose from apprentice to president of the $40 million firm bearing his name.
Laron Baliste of 308 State St reports to police that his roommate Lazar Junkowitz deposited funds and withdrew $150 from his Joliet National Bank account after Baliste had housed and aided him. Baliste discovered the missing bankbook and money upon returning home, sparking a search for Junkowitz.
Edward Burnett a 36 year old Chicago cook told Joliet police he was locked in the dining car cellar of the California Express for two days and nights. He was rescued by a conductor and police after collapsing on the street and revived with a meal. The police will investigate his tale.
Frank Bemis and Florence Mickey proprietors of the Crystal Stairs Barber Shop were arrested after refusing Patrolman John Wrashe’s orders to enter the store or move on. Captain Corcoran ruled they had right to stand outside awaiting trade. A crowd followed as they were led through the street in white coats.
State's Attorney demands John D. Walker and John J. Mack repay Joliet township 9982.20 alleging illegal fees. The action sparks a major political clash with officials claiming improper collection practices spanned years and prompting possible grand jury scrutiny.
