Smithfield approves budget despite tax rate concerns
Town Manager Michael Scott defended a budget with a 57 cent per 100 valuation property tax rate since 2003 while noting county services cost more. The plan raises electricity and sewer charges, increases trash fees, boosts police pay by 10,000 each, funds a soccer complex and fire station design, and envisions a phased park and town improvements. The council approved the budget 4-3 after debate over electricity increases.
