The Methodist Youth Revival begins at 8 30 Monday morning June 12 at the Methodist Church. George Ross will speak each morning. Classes are offered for every age group from kindergarten through young people. Rev Robert Greaves will assist and invites the public to attend.
Mrs. Dan Lester hosted the Christ Episcopal Ladies Auxiliary for the final meeting of the year. Members supported clothing drives for Rusk Hospital and Tyler T B Hospital, seeking sleepwear for men and women, plus quill scraps and crochet thread. Magazines are needed. donations will be picked up on request led by chairwoman Mrs Alf Faviel.
On Friday June the jury commission met to select the jury for the November December term of District Court. The five member panel included one woman and one Black man. Mrs Lucille Bullard was the first woman on the jury commission here and J H Montgomery a former Marion County school teacher was the first Black person to serve on the commission. Other members were FL Jones M W McDonald and Thom H Clark.
Funeral services were held at 3 pm Friday in Haggard Chapel for Robert War ner Loomis who died June 2 at his Beaumont home. A Jefferson native born September 17, 1874, he was a retired merchant and farmer, Mason and Eastern Star member, and longtime Sunday School superintendent. Survivors include daughter Louise Loomis of Beaumont and brother R. J. A. Loomis of Jefferson. Pallbearers were Bill Shaw Raymond Shaw Jesse DeWare Jr Newt McBride Leon Bass Robert Williams Edward Taylor.
Thirty-nine May graduates of Jefferson High School and four sponsors returned Thursday night from a senior trip to Eureka Springs Arkansas. Sightseeing tours and swimming at Roaring River in Missouri filled the recreation program. Sponsors were Mrs G A Yoachum Mrs Fred Hackney Mrs A Cal ilson and Maud Brooks. Roy Seudday drove the school bus.
The Jefferson Post Office started certified mail as part of operations with postmaster Halbert McQuinn stating the service provides proof of delivery for items without monetary value. The new option costs 14 cents plus regular postage and includes six months of delivery records, with a separate 15 cent stamp on sale for certified mail use.
Miss Ethel Lewis Switz of Jefferson and N W Bailes of Sherman were married at St Josephs rectory in Marshall at 3:30 pm on June 3. Rev L L Meyer officiated. Attendants were Miss Grace Switz and Robert J Switz. The couple will reside in Sherman.
Mr and Mrs James hosted a steak dinner Sunday evening honoring Mr and Mrs J O Wray who were recently married. Guests included Davis Wray Pete Duck Mr and Mrs Ben Bollman Mr and Mrs J I Wray Mrs Belle Wood Miss Sharon Ford the honorees and the hosts.
Sue Wise and Sherilyn Bailey, both 13, won the District 5 Vegetable Demonstration Contest and will compete in the state contest at Texas A&M on June 4. The girls, junior leaders of 4-H, prepared a three variation tomato lettuce salad and discussed vitamin sources. They traveled with adult leaders June 8–9 to AGMS.
Miss Patsy Key became the bride of Roger Harris in a June 3 ceremony at the Baptist parsonage. Rev. Edwin Johnson officiated with maid of honor Miss Carmen Yoachum and best man Pete Duck. The couple, from Jefferson, plan to reside there. she is a Jefferson High School 1955 graduate and honors student. Harris is a Navy veteran who worked for Thiokol at Karnack.
Corporal Elmo R Preston son of Mr and Mrs E L Preston of Jefferson pitched a no hit no run softball game in Germany He did so for his unit the 287th Field Artillery Battalion during regular Army competition Preston a supply specialist entered the Army in September 1953 after graduating from Jefferson High School He was stationed at Fort Ord California before arriving in Europe in February 1954
Proceedings this week in the seventh judicial court include a revoked probate sentence with penitentiary term, subpoenas fined $56 each for failure to appear, multiple sentences for chicken theft and burglary, a suspended sentence for child desertion, one person jailed one day and fined $250 plus costs on a second offense DWI charge.
Gerald Corpier, May graduate of Marshall High, ran over a full grown 24 inch coral snake on Black Jack Road near Woodlawn Friday morning. This is the third deadly coral snake killed in the area in recent weeks. The warning comes as the Texas Game and Fish Commission urges caution and notes coral snakes were previously unknown in the region.

The Lions Club annual banquet and officers installation were held at the Legion Hall with District 3 representative Lindley Beckworth as keynote. Charles Davis installed as president. Ned Ford named president. Tommy Turner first vice president. O T Summerlin second vice. Milton Bass third vice. Attendees honored for 190% attendance and fines for sports attire added festive notes.
The Rev. H. T. Isgitt of Converse La will preach at the Hartzo Union Church revival starting Wednesday night June 15 in the Gray community. Services begin at 7 30 each evening for several days lasting at least through Sunday. Friends of the church and Mr Isgitt from all parts of the county are invited.
The May 13 marriage of Shirley Ann Johnston and Ayte Robert V. Tarlecki was held at Christ of King Catholic Church in Bossier City with Father Scanlon presiding. The bride, a 1954 Jefferson High School graduate, is the daughter of the late W. J. Johnston and Mrs. W. J. Johnston of Marshall. Tarlecki, son of Leonard Tarlecki of Bridgeport Pennsylvania, is a Bridgeport High School alumnus currently stationed at Barksdale Air Force Base.
Mr and Mrs Duncan Thompson and daughter Paula have moved back to Linden and are living in a new home completed by Mr and Mrs Fred White in southwest Linden. Thompson will be coach at Linden High School this year. He previously coached here in 1957 44 and moved to Pineville last year. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Frank Thompson of Atlanta, a graduate of Atlanta High School and East Texas State Teachers College at Commerce. His wife is the former Miss Billy Jo McCoy of Douglassville. They are members of the Methodist Church.
Sarah Ann Riley Nancy Carte and Felissa Taylor travel to Austin this week to participate in the Bluebonnett Girls State program. They join peers from area high schools to engage in government simulations and leadership activities hosted by the state program.
The East Texas Voiture of the 4) and & convened at Jefferson Tuesday night with about 65 present. Jefferson members hosted the convention as grand Chef-de-Gare Joe Mathis of Fort Worth paid an official visit and spoke. Jerry and James Hugh Gamble staged a puppet show and Eddie Cobb performed with a steel guitar.
A vacation church school will open at 9 am Monday June 12 at Christ Episcopal Church for youth of all ages. The Rev Lawton Riley announced the school inviting everyone though especially welcoming those without a church home. A recess and social period will be featured each morning.
Judge Maxwell Welch of New Boston ruled the stock law election valid at a June 2 hearing. The contestants have no notice of appeal and time remains to file a petition to a higher court, none having been filed yet.
