Man and Woman Sentenced to Death in Two States

A New Jersey man Lester Underdown and Hattie Evans were found guilty of murder and sentenced to die in the electric chair after a North Jersey trial. In California Clarence King was condemned for the February Redwood Highway slaying of Minnie McCoy, with the death penalty to be pronounced Tuesday. The trials featured claims of premeditated murder versus an accidental shooting and noted the couple’s complex relations and recent marriages.

Presbyterian Church Celebrates 96th Year in Capital City

The First Presbyterian Church of Jefferson City marks 96 years since its 1834 founding with a Sunday service led by Rev. A. B. Jackson. The church, now at Madison and McCarty streets, features a $120,000 building and a 1928 dedication after a rapid $100,000 one day building fund drive.

Perjury charges filed against Capone in Miami Florida

Miami June 14 AP Perjury charges were filed against Scarface Al Capone after he defeated a nuisance action to padlock his Palm Island home. He was ordered to answer warrants arising from false arrest against safety director S D McCreary. State’s attorney vowed to run him out of the county. Capone left court for Palm Beach when warrants arrived. Deputy sheriffs were sent to serve them. The move follows Capone’s attempts to remain in the community amid strong local opposition. Leon Burnett and Alden Stockard plan to attend the Iowa State Boy Scout encampment at Camp Rainbow Des Moines starting July 18. Alden will attempt Eagle Scout, Melvin Tudor leads Red Cross lifeguard training. New corkscrew-bristled brush tips for tight-neck bottles noted.

Sikeston Man Charged with Murder of Wife

Ernest F. Hodges of Memphis, formerly Sikeston, arrested near Blytheville on murder charges in the fatal shooting of his estranged wife after a chase by farmers. Hodges, born in Advance, Missouri, previously had a tryout as an outfielder with the St. Louis Cardinals years ago.
