A wartime appeal asks readers to bring pits and shells from peaches prunes olives apricots plums cherries and dates and shells from Brazil nuts hickory nuts walnuts to supply guarl charcoal for gas masks. The government requires vast quantities immediately to protect soldiers from harm.
The past week itemizes renewals of subscriptions by W E Moulton Willis Schoolcraft Fred Cather Henry Pugh Jos Powell Geo Waltz Mr. E W Swank Mrs. L J Henderson and others.
The passing of W. B. Milton removes a longtime Jasper County resident of high esteem. He settled here in the early seventies, amassed property including 400 acres of farmland southwest of Jasper, and died at nearly 80. He was buried at Cedar Bluff Cemetery with Rev. Mr. Weaver officiating and left a widow and eight children: A. J., Wm. A., E. J. Mil nom near Jasper. L. and J. V. Millon of Webb City. Mrs. Julia Collier of La Russell. and Mrs. Ellen Crutcher of Neck City.

Nellie Neeley eighteen her age? no sixteen? text says fifteen-year-old Nellie Neeley daughter of Mr and Mrs Richard Neeley of Linmar married Joe Hardenbrook of Jasper Illinois. They wed in Girard Kansas after short trip to Duenweg and Pittsburg. Hardenbrook works in railroad shops.
Edna Yates from Blue and Bethel is mentioned with multiple visits across neighbors. Several families including Garrett Hartley Dukes King and Yates share Sunday and midweek calls. A paper note ends with a wartime sentiment urging support for soldiers overseas.
A local appeal urges Jasper residents to donate worn clothing for Belgian and French refugees. Families are asked to sort through closets this week and deliver usable items, not necessarily in perfect repair, to the Jasper Red Cross officers or drop sites including The News office, the hotel, Crow's store, or Crandall's store. Items needed cover men, women, and children from shirts to coats, shoes, stockings, and hats, with specific sizes noted.
Patterson and Rex shipped two cars of hogs and one of cattle to Kansas City. Ward and Wolfe shipped three cars of cattle and hogs. Two cars of cattle were fat steers finished at the Rolit. Wolfe place lies east of Jasper. Farmers grow nervous about high winter stock feed costs and current prices. hogs, cows, and calves of all ages are entering markets.
Three names were omitted from the last week’s registration list. Of 104 registrants, 101 were recorded and three were omitted: H. F. Embree, laborer. Jewel Lilly, farmer. Albert Rice, engineer.
McClelland Underwood aged 55 years 10 months and a day died Wednesday September 15 after living on the W. St. Schooler farm with Albert Simmons southeast of Jasper. Burial was Friday at Stafford Cemetery Key Everett Looney in charge. He was born in Highland County Ohio in 1862 and came to the area as a child. He leaves a sister four brothers and many relatives. Also noted is a Home Canning Demonstration by Mrs. Sadie Bates Brooks county home demonstrator on Thursday October 3 at the home of Mrs. Harry Lille southwest of Jasper inviting all women and interested locals.
