Deaths From Influenza Claim Local Family Unity

Samuel Lehman a well known young farmer from the German settlement 10 miles northwest of Jasper died last Friday of pneumonia due to influenza. He was 22 and born to Swiss German parents. Funeral held Sunday and burial in the German Cemetery 14 miles northwest of Jasper. Younger brother Joe died at Camp Funston late this week and was shipped home for burial. Several other family members are sick.

Farm Sales Report From Jasper District

Charley Sullens notes two land sales last week. D W Martin sold 80 acres one mile south and three east of Jasper to Floyd Jones of St Joseph at 115 dollars per acre. C B R Patterson sold an unspecified acreage two miles south and two west of Jasper to T F Weber of Spencer Iowa at 125 dollars per acre.

Patriotism Meeting in Jasper Promotes Fourth Liberty Loan

A street meeting in Jasper on a Saturday urged support for the Fourth Liberty Loan. Judge Pearson of Joplin spoke about citizen responsibility and government needs, followed by Joplin’s Malang who rallied the crowd with vivid wartime scenes. Subscriptions flowed, yet Jasper trails with $62,200 left of its quota and only three days remain.

We Did Not Make the Rule War Notice

War Industries Board issued a rule banning continued subscriptions three months after expiration unless renewed and paid. Notices have been sent and subscribers urged to respond. Mrs. Margaret Gardner Dies At Jasper age 90, formerly Margaret Ann Kirby, born July 11, 1833 near New York City. She married Clayton A. Bradford in Monroe, Michigan, in 1850. They moved to Jasper County in 1871. Bradford died two years later. She later married John Gardner in 1877 near Preston. Funeral held at W. M. Cline home conducted by Rev. J. W. Moore. Interment Bradford Cemetery.

Reports reach the Poultry Division that some dealers intend to discontinue candling eggs. No ruling on this yet. practice by the first purchaser is expected to continue until revoked. H. L. Kempster, Poultry Division Food Administration.

No Change In Sugar Purchase Limit Rule Remains

The rule restricting sugar sales to city customers to two pounds and five pounds for country customers remains in force. Sales for canning are exempt. The notice urges sending the paper to soldiers in trench and camp.
