The school board and city council met jointly to close schools theaters churches and all public meeting places until further notice as a precaution against Spanish influenza. Officials urge parents to keep children at home and off the streets until the danger passes.
Subscriptions renewed over the past days include H A Radford CL Purcell Mrs. D Hastings L V Nunnelly W 8 Tabler Kellogg Marble Co A J Hatfield Wealey Cline Quy Chapman Mrs. D W Martin Chas. Thomas Low Strecker E D Boyd. The note asks to send the paper to the boys in trench and camp.
Report from Jasper and vicinity notes several illness cases. Roy Bowers returns home from Monett with typhoid like symptoms. Homer Stockdale's children and Clarence Kieth are ill with influenza. Lee Pinnell and Sammy Wine are recovering from a week of illness. J E Wine's young daughter was sick yesterday. Dr Schooler cites a dozen or more cases in the German settlement north of Jasper. Lehman, Obergfel and Banwart families report 11 cases but none serious.
A wartime call to action blends the poem In Flanders Fields with urgent appeals to buy Liberty Bonds. The piece cites Col McCrae’s verse and urges every person to support the war effort financially to aid France and Belgium, aid displaced families, and speed peace by backing bonds. It invokes casualties, home destruction, and the duty to prevent future losses, urging community members to act today.
W H Waters Jr of First National Bank says Jasper residents have largely met war claims yet many others can contribute. The county council seeks bond slackers to supply funds for government needs. Mrs. Robert Horton and sister Mrs. Alice Griffin visit. Griffin was Miss Alice Bowers. A Naval recruit husband is at Great Lakes Station.
In 1917 about 926 newspapers in the United States and Canada suspended publication, with overall outlets reduced by 250 due to consolidations. The note cites wartime economic strain on small papers, urging readers and advertisers cooperation as War Industries Board rules take effect November 1. New rules curb free copies, set renewal deadlines, cap page counts, limit exchanges, and require adherence to government guidelines.
The notice urges renewal by November 1 or risk removal from the list. Expressing inevitability, the speaker asks friends to ease the process and views the renewal as unavoidable.
A public outdoor meeting will convene Saturday at 3 PM at Grand and Main Streets in Jasper to promote the town quota of Fourth Liberty Bonds. John Jackson of Meher Olela and formerly a resident of Jasper died in a hospital at OCalumboe Kansas from typhoid fever after ten weeks illness. He was a senior partner at Dalerson Bros in business here for two years. The Jackson family were highly esteemed in Jasper, leaving a widow and seven children. He is survived by brother George of Miami, two sisters Mrs Roy Avery and Mrs Frank Nebel of Picker aaiece, Mrs J P Dines of Cardin, and stepmother Mrs A P Jackson of Carthage.
