In small places church yards often become shabby while private property stays tidy. The writer notes several churchyards, including Jasper, are badly overgrown and require mowing and trimming.
Pittsburg Iowa writer Park McMahan wed Mary C Smith at Presbyterian Church of New Castle Pa on Thursday May 24. He is a printer who often includes samples of his work with letters and his marriage notice encloses a label for Tanglefoot fly paper. No clear connection to the widow is stated.
News Office completed a new Phone Directory last week for Manager Johnson. Patrons may obtain copies by calling the News Office First National Bank or the telephone central office. Robi Wolfe shipped a carload of fat cattle and hogs to Kansas City on Monday. He fed the stock on his farm northeast of Jasper.
Jay B. Iden vents against town poetry that misses farm life as he praises rain soaked days in spring. The poet contrasts cattle work in muddy barn lots with refined verse and ends with a civic note: all men aged 21 to 81 must register on June 6.
Everett Deardorff and Grace Tester married at Lamar with Rev. W. K. Chatten officiating. Bride, Jasper High alumna, and groom, Jasper High graduate, plan teaching careers with Deardorff to be principal at Troy. War recruitment urged as local units seek volunteers ahead of draft.
Mr. J. B. Taffner and Mrs. Lydia Smith, longtime Lamar residents, were married at the Lamar courthouse last Thursday. Taffner, a retired farmer, widow of his first wife. Smith has been married twice before, both prior husbands deceased.
Announced by Ir. Knott Alph Campbell and wife welcomed a girl east of town on Thursday May 25. George Moser and wife reported a girl born Monday May 25, at a location northwest of town. Subscribe for your daily paper at the News office.
