A pie supper is planned at the North Star schoolhouse on Monday night. All are invited. ladies are requested to bring pies. Clara Fenner, teacher.
Ed Hille presented a black orpington hen egg last Saturday measuring 64 inches one way and 77-8 the other and marketed hens that earned him 1825 dollars. He offered a year's subscription to The News if anyone could beat the egg and hens, noting he suspects the man has never subscribed and inviting him to join now.
Renewals and new subscribers listed include Mrs. A. R. Bowers A. J. Armstrong Mrs. W. R. B. Farr Ce M. Wells. New subscribers are Joe Rice route 2 Jasper J. M. Etter route 8 Golden City and Mrs. Mary Finley Jasper.
A plea urges Jasper citizens and farmers within five miles to join the Commercial Club to support seven road and bridge projects. Petition signers donate sums for four mile sections north of the Wagner and Lilly properties, Keener corner, Seely corner, and other routes toward Jasper. The piece emphasizes county court cooperation and warns against holdouts.
Sheriff John Harlow and his 20 year old son were shot inside the Barton County jail in Lamar by a federal prisoner as the sheriff prepared to transport him to St Louis. The prisoner, arrested near Lamar, allegedly received a revolver from the inmate’s wife earlier. The son was wounded in the doorway and is paralyzed. the prisoner fled into nearby woods and is believed to have been picked up by men in an automobile. The Harrows were longtime Democratic figures in Barton County.
The Coon Creek bridge on the Jefferson Highway has long endangered life and property. Courts viewed it and ordered a new structure, but the new court, citing county debt, threatens to cancel the order. A solution should be found to replace the dangerous, disreputable bridge.
Miss Cyra Baird popular in Jasper’s younger set married Russell Hough last Wednesday afternoon at Webb City. They reside on Hough’s farm east of Jasper. A lively charivari followed at the farm Thursday night. Friends in Jasper and Carthage extend best wishes to the couple.
Charley Kittlerman writes The News from France dated February 3. He reports skating in France and notes the French girls are better skaters than American girls. He says he is not crazy about the French girls but enjoys skating.

The Internal Revenue Service in Kansas City announced a 45 day extension for corporations and individuals to file complete income tax returns if they notify the collector in writing that they cannot finish by March 15. A 25 percent payment on the estimated total is due by the original date. New forms reflecting the ruling should reach Kansas City by March 6.
The will of William T. Shell who lived east of Jasper has been probated. He directs his entire estate to be shared equally among his brothers and sisters Mary C. Stbinson Ida Cassity George A. Shell Earl Shell and Minnie Miles. George A. Shell is named executor. The will was written February 20 with J. TH. Bailey and C. D. Stith as witnesses.
A ciphering contest and pie supper are set for Pleasant Hill Schoolhouse Saturday night. March and a candy box will go to the best cipher and to the most popular young lady. A jar of pickles will go to the laziest man. Proceeds fund school books. Elsie Gresham, teacher.
