Sidewise Dog Trots Through a Pennsylvania Town
On a sunny morning at a store porch in a Pennsylvania German town, Old Baumgartner recalls his feud over land with Sarah Pressel while his son Leffy and Sally Pressel attract attention. The scene features neighbors, a noisy crowd, and a humorous digression about a horse and a “sidewise dog trot” as the old man frets over inheritance, marriage hopes, and farm prospects. The tale unfolds with colorful local dialogue and growing romantic tension between Leffy and Sally, set against the meadow between farms and the railroad.
