Feeding refugees on a French train during wartime
A French interior ministry telephoned the American Red Cross in Paris to feed a thousand east Amiens refugees passing through Acheres at seven pm. An army of volunteers loaded a truck with beef, milk, bread, and fruit and set out to serve the exiles aboard a 28-car train. Families from Picardy and Champagne, some refugees for a second or third time, received bread, cheese, fruit, and care as the train moved toward Paris amid background shelling and air raids.
