The News Office completed the new Phone Directory last week for Manager Johnson. Patrons may obtain copies by calling the News Office First National Bank or the telephone central office. The central office asks all patrons to call by number.

Birthday party for Little Misa June Ingle

Fifth birthday celebration held Wednesday afternoon at the parents’ Diamond neighborhood home. Friends joined in games and a long lawn table with cream cake. Assisted serving by Gladys Pope and Neva Ingle. Guests listed include Pope, Ingle, Wardlow, Berryhill, and Cline among others. Special friend from Jasper attended.

Sperm an in Cyclone District Results

A long report describes a devastating cyclone near Charleston and Mattoon, Illinois. The storm wrecked buildings, killed at least one person and injured several, with one depot floor left as a cement remnant and monuments toppled in Mattoon Cemetery. The writer, G. W. Harvey, notes trains ahead of and behind the twister as it struck. The piece also covers Ozark Press Association meeting duties and a Children’s Day program at the M E Church next Sunday.

Nation’s railway man heads to France with troops

One of Station Agent J L Brown’s brothers visited Jasper this week and will join the Nation’s military forces. Brown, an engineer, will be sent to France soon. His Army pay is 36 a month, far below his civilian wage of about 82 a week. Of 69 locals drafted last week, 4 claimed disability, 5 exempt by occupation, 45 exempt due to dependents, and 25 did not claim exemption, including several young married men.
