The News Office completed the new Phone Directory last week for Manager Johnson. Patrons may obtain copies by calling the News Office First National Bank or the telephone central office. The central office asks all patrons to call by number.
Fifth birthday celebration held Wednesday afternoon at the parents’ Diamond neighborhood home. Friends joined in games and a long lawn table with cream cake. Assisted serving by Gladys Pope and Neva Ingle. Guests listed include Pope, Ingle, Wardlow, Berryhill, and Cline among others. Special friend from Jasper attended.
A long report describes a devastating cyclone near Charleston and Mattoon, Illinois. The storm wrecked buildings, killed at least one person and injured several, with one depot floor left as a cement remnant and monuments toppled in Mattoon Cemetery. The writer, G. W. Harvey, notes trains ahead of and behind the twister as it struck. The piece also covers Ozark Press Association meeting duties and a Children’s Day program at the M E Church next Sunday.
An old Journal patron recalls paying 1 a year twenty years ago while corn prices then were 12 cents a bushel. He notes the paper was smaller with fewer pages, and claims 810 bushels then paid a year of subscription. today one bushel suffices. He renews after considering the change.
Farmers report rapid corn preparation this week and expect harvest next week. Wheat yields are estimated near 8 to 16 bushels with little first crop and not much of the latter. Oats are said to be the best in years. Read your home paper.
A Capper Bulletin poem decries postwar farmers who face loans and shortages. It contrasts bankers and government aid with farmers needing tractors and cash to farm. The voice defends farmers as saviors while ridiculing calls that question their crops.
Next Sunday June 17 preaching at the Christian Church invites all to bring a filled basket. Hay frames for youth and children autos for older folks, escorted to the home of 8 W Dewees miles south and 43 miles east of Jasper for a spread dinner and program with good speaking singing and time for all who may come
One of Station Agent J L Brown’s brothers visited Jasper this week and will join the Nation’s military forces. Brown, an engineer, will be sent to France soon. His Army pay is 36 a month, far below his civilian wage of about 82 a week. Of 69 locals drafted last week, 4 claimed disability, 5 exempt by occupation, 45 exempt due to dependents, and 25 did not claim exemption, including several young married men.
The First National Bank of Jasper becomes the largest local investor in Liberty Loan Bonds subscribing $5,000. Jasper Bank and other Jasper concerns and residents participate in the bond drive to support the war effort.
The Comrads and Alpha Classes of Grace Sunday School present an entertainment and ice cream social on Friday night June 15 on the church lawn. Program begins at 4 o clock. Public invited.
