The News Office reports the completion of a new telephone directory last week for manager Johnson. Patrons are invited to obtain copies at the News Office, the First National or the central telephone offices. The central office asks customers to call by number for assistance.
The Children’s Day program at the M E Church Sunday night drew a packed audience. The orderly exercises featured songs and a display of patriotic pieces led by Misses Hattie Kunkler Mary Hake Maude Cline and Messrs Allen Moterson and Krank Crow. They presented America Star Spangled Banner Liberty statue and references to the Army and Navy with the Star Spangled Banner as a centerpiece.
The editor received a basket of pansies from W T Hager, a gesture greatly appreciated. The note mentions a water s teron and a pumpkin or fruit basket as possible gifts from friends, and announces the new serial The Neal Man will begin next week.
A call to support the American Red Cross War Fund with public appeals and male and female volunteers across Jasper County. The message urges over subscription to aid hospitals, doctors, nurses, and wounded soldiers as American youth sail to France and troops endure hardship. Also reports death of Mrs. Rachel Haynes, long-time resident and church member, age 60.

The Gulick Sheep Ranch party toured Spring Valley Ranety to inspect shearing nearing completion after two weeks. They learned the flock holds about 6000 pounds of wool while J Gillick & Son reported fleeces and pasture holdings including white-faced sheep and cattle. Wolves rising as a menace leads ranch hands to guard pens with torches at night.
Mrs. Horace Shapley died at Cathege hospital Tuesday night after an appendicitis operation. She stayed at the hospital three weeks and was returned home Monday. She was a daughter of A. T. Bowers and sister of Mrs. Job Norton, Mrs. Alice Mowers, and Mrs. Fred Norton, all residents near Jasper. sisters include Mrs. Alfred Mona of Maysville, Missouri.
Wilh D Wood on the Dieohles farm southwest of Jasper reports a Saturday trial of navy beans. He notes good crop prospects and that his field tests show strong potential. He has two acres in beans and believes his wheat and corn prospects are also improved despite recent work.
A report from Jasper notes a strong wheat crop with promising heads and heavy yields. Farmers say the sample shows long heads and robust quality, despite shorter straw. Elling reports in the Minnond neighborhood west of Jasper observing similar crop potential.
The News notes births this week to Guy Chapman and wife in the northwest area on Saturday June 16 a boy. To D R Broux and wife in Smiles northwest on Monday June 1X a girl. To Brite Hager and wife of Jasper on Tuesday June 1) a boy. Charles Stus sell Hager is listed as a name in the report.
