C. R. Wallar and his relatives and aunt Will Roby visited H. Hendricks and his family this Sunday, sharing time together with extended kin.
Eugene Smith of the Ninth Mounted Engineers arrived Sunday for a several days furlough at home in El Vaso Texas. He wears a marksman emblem on his coat and reports good health and enjoyment of a soldier’s life on the Texas Mexican border. Clarence Donnell reportedly has ear trouble and was in the camp hospital when Smith left. Donnell is in the Mighty Mounted Engineers company.
Ben King was knocked down and run over by his own car at Sam King's, 245 miles north of Jasper, on Monday. While cranking the vehicle on a downhill grade it started, dragging him 650 feet. He suffered three rib fractures, a sprained back, and numerous bruises.
Jewel Lilly and W. Webber found a young man with a stolen Ford by the road. Despite no license, the suspect was tracked by bloodhounds and arrested after confessing in Kansas City to stealing the car for an insurance payout.
A box supper at King Schoolhouse raised about 55 dollars to buy an organ and slate blackboard for the school treasury. Miss Elsie Queen taught and won the candy box voting contest, with Miss Lena Garrett close behind. In the feet contest Joe Patterson beat Dewey Tucker and Jim Blaxe by a clear inch or two, as observed by attendees.
The week of March 1 16 has been designated as National Implement Inspection and Repair Week. Farmers are urged to inspect their machinery, determine needed repairs, and place orders now. Extra parts may be harder to obtain this year, so do not delay this important matter.
Thirty Jasper County men left Carthage for Camp Funston Monday night. John Campbell George Campbell and Arthur L Snyder of Jasper were among the contingent. George Campbell was put in charge of the men during the trip. A supper was given the men at the Y M C A and they were escorted to the train by the Carthage Home Guards and the Light Guard Band.
J D Harbur received a message Tuesday evening that his father Judge Harbur who lived near Sheldon for many years had died. He was close to 90 years of age and had been sick for a long time.

Christian Buerge died at 89 near Jasper after a brief heart ailment. He was a respected farmer and longtime resident who moved from Ontario to Michigan then to Jasper County in 1844. Funeral Thursday at his home with Mennonite minister Rev. Andrew Shenk sermon and interment in Mitchell Cemetery. Surviving children include Mrs. Kate Dinteman John I. Buerge Mrs. Jacob Scott Lydia Elizabeth Buerge and a daughter who died in infancy.
The Webb and Delmar Brown left Jasper for Denver and later sent bundles from St. Louis showing new uniforms. They announced enlistment in the Coast Artillery and training at Jefferson Barracks, after prior rejections in Navy and Army attempts. Both are under draft age and express strong spirit.
Mrs. W. B. Joiner of Joplin visited her sister Mrs. H. D. Grim and other Jasper relatives last week, sharing time with family.
