Old-Time Bread Recipe Sent In To War Effort

Mra Win Megins of Jasper offers an old time bread recipe to help the war effort. She describes setting a sponge at noon then cooking mush from corn meal, cooling, stirring in the sponge, and letting it stand overnight. The next day mix warm wheat flour, knead into a stiff dough, rise, mold into loaves, rise again, and bake for 1 1/4 hours. The bread uses one part meal to two parts flour and stays moist longer.

Hog Prices High at Jamesport Auction

T H B Bell and Thos McCall returned last Thursday from J L Faulkner's in Jamesport Missouri where 56 sows and gilts sold for an average 194 with a top sow at 4100. Judge McGowan bought a sow from Beils herd for 245 while Faulkner donated a gift to the Red Cross that brought 650.

Crow Mercantile Co Moving to Webb Bros Building

Crow Mercantile Co is moving into the remodeled former Webb Bros building in Jasper. The new glove room spans a main downstairs space with groceries on the east wall, a two-thirds depth shoe section, a dry goods area, millinery and children’s wear on the west, and a back 20 by twenty foot produce room with a large cellar and shed space for customer cars. The renovations aim for modern shelving, glass floor cases, and ample storage, signaling faith in Jasper’s growth.
