A wagon tongue snapped causing a near disaster on a rural road near Bethel church. Mrs Fisher dragged her child to safety as occupants were thrown from the moving vehicle. Mrs Berry and baby were briefly feared dead but recovered. others suffered minor bruises and were aided by bystanders.
The ladies of the ME Church gave a farewell dinner at the parsonage honoring Mr and Mrs Lynn Monroe. A large number attended and an excellent dinner was served. The Monroes and family will leave for Colorado after a visit to Chorthogge the first of the week.
Lynn Monroe retires after eight years as Jasper News editor publisher selling plant and business to Joe C. Combs of Lamar who takes possession Saturday September 1. The eighth year No 52 issue marks the paper’s growth from a small start in 1808 to a leading weekly in the area. Monroe and family plan to move to Colorado likely Colorado Springs for asthma relief. Combs, foreman of the Republican Sentinel, is praised as a skilled job printer and newspaper man. He rents Monroe’s south First street residence and expects growth for the News under his oversight.
Chas Whitesel moves into a newly completed concrete block blacksmith shop built by J K Schott and his assistants. The dandy new shop stands as a point of pride for Chas. Buy bale ties at Wolf How Co.
School opens Monday as Supt Sweetland reports bright prospects for Jasper schools. Enrollment is expected to rise with new families and non residents moving in, boosting both the district and the high school. Changes in staff include Miss Margrave taking over Prof Bozzill’s high school post.
