Webb Brothers Mercantile Company advertises Bain Wagons in use since 1852 and praised as among the best. They promote Swift’s Fertilizer and Superior Drill for sowing wheat and fertilizer, claim oats yield of up to three bushels per acre, and stock school books, shoes, and supplies including American Boy Walkover and Western Boy footwear for boys.
An explosion at the Maine-Missouri Mining Co. mine near Jasper three miles southwest blew apart a new blacksmith shop and hardware, igniting kerosene and dynamite. The blast nearly destroyed the site but extinguished a fire, sparing the 15,000 mill and keeping about twenty men employed. Jasper residents felt the blast distinctly three miles away. Also reported: Jasper Hotel sold to Mrs. Lizzin Persinger, improvements planned, and Springfield State Normal School reporting record enrollment last year and open to new term September 9.
A chaotic baseball game ended with Carthage McCubbins defeating Jasper 11 to 8 after a turbulent inning spree. Jasper surged ahead early, then Carthage rallied with strong hitting and late runs. Spectators noted the unorthodox play and surprising crowd, as both teams exchanged blows throughout.
Notes praise Biarry Barch as umpire with a wag system that amused spectators. The McCubbins, young and courteous, may return for another game though they cannot claim the win. Jesper faced missing key players Vea Wolf Will Hicka and Tom Hell, altering the outcome. Jim Hunt, ex-Jasper player, drove a long hit that moved three pairs of Carriage legos across the robber. A return game is planned as locals strengthen before the rematch.
Barcozio approves H B Boyd’s $10 000 purchase of waterworks bonds after delays and a prior sale to A Kean who challenged legality. Boyd reports bonds are airtight and ready to fund immediate construction barring unforeseen problems.
Buchanan from Humpaton Jaz visited the old Roe farm to monitor conditions. He feared drought would force moving livestock to Iown, but reports show better conditions. A public sale of farm property is set for about October 15.
Road crews in Jasper County started a crude oil sprinkling experiment on a quarter mile stretch between Chitwood and Smelter Hill. Over 4,000 gallons were to be used, but rain and water saturation halted the effort until the road dries. Traffic is detoured as a traction-engine sprayer heats oil for flow, with officials hopeful for a proper test once conditions clear.
Park McMahan, formerly of this city, assumes editor and manager duties starting with last week’s issue. His paper is in good standing with Nettleton merchants. Joyce the Clothier offers a Thoroughbred Hat in a 3-7-tf promotion.
