A call to business leaders to support oiling streets to reduce dust and improve street appearance. Advocates claim reduced fly nuisance and better customer comfort, arguing oiling is inexpensive and needed in the city’s current financial climate. The appeal emphasizes public benefits and citizen support for measures to oil streets.
An examination of rural students was held in Jasper last Saturday for those seeking admission to Jasper High next year. The list of examinees includes Bernice Bushy, Boyd Bushy, Pearl Bushy from Dewey. Nins Patterson, Oan Welton, Alma Gresham, Ising Sun. Fern Patrick, Madlina Davis, Paul Davis, Agnes Kesham, Henn Earls, Clyde Crow from Sheridan. Ethel Kirby, Orval White, Liberty. Glenn Owings, Pleasant Hill, Koy Bray, Dixie, Arlie Hummel, Union Valley. Clyde Strecker, Summit, Alma Koy, Dudenville, Mae Lauderbaugh, Deer Creek.
Samuel Foreman brought specimens of the evergreen bag worm to the News office last week. Agricultural College says the worm can do damage, but only if numerous. Properly cared orchards with spraying remain safe this year.
Looking Forward. Corn nearly all planted. Wheat stands a foot high and thriving. Fruit prospects are poor compared to recent years. Local observers report chinch bugs in Salem and other neighborhoods. George Waltz notes wheat looks excellent, pastures strong, trees full of blooms. Jasper County’s unprecedented wheat acreage reduces corn area, yet most farmers plant 15 to 75 acres of corn with silos and favorable soil moisture. General prosperity seems to linger in the garden spot.
The entertainment of living pictures in music drew a large audience at the opera house. A tiny dance by Master Almon Teeter, under two years old, impressed the crowd. The program’s breadth prevented full coverage, but the success prompts talks of touring nearby towns. The Lyceum committee thanks numerous contributors and the talent in both programs.
The Council of Women of Jasper County will meet at the library in Webb City at 2 20 p m on Thursday April 2. The agenda includes the annual election of officers and reports from committees and members on the industrial home. All women invited.
City council ordered sidewalk laid on the west side of Webb's addition for two squares following a petition by a majority of property owners.
Miss Hlamehe Bauman resigned from Jasper High School last week and returned to St. Louis to recuperate her health. Her departure is deeply regretted as she was among the school's most popular teachers. Prof. Hurt will handle all but two classes for the rest of the term. Hoy Webb, a senior, takes the sociology class and Mendel Drake, a junior, takes the solid geometry class.
J J Wheat who has been in the grocery business here nearly & years sold out last week to Joe Deardorff. Mr Wheat came here from Arkansas in 1907 and had built up a nice business in staple and fancy groceries, enjoying a large jeash trade. Mr Deardorff has been here all his life and his wide acquaintance in this section will assure him a generous patronage. Mr Wheat's health has been bad this winter and he proposes to rest up a while.
Andrew Oberfelt, a farmer miles northeast of Jasper, had his leg broken just above the ankle when his team ran away after horses frightened by a road scraper. The driver was thrown and the wheel ran over his leg. Dr. Schooler treated the fracture.
A. W. Macon district manager announces a Jasper agency for Chicago Kitchenette Co. F. J. Cooley will be local manager, with the agency located over Sharp's hardware in the Sitts building. The firm manufactures a steel food cabinet, not a refrigerator, and very unlike ordinary wooden cabinets.
Thomas B. Talley aged 71 died at the home of Mr. Watkins nine miles northwest of Jasper last Saturday from Bright's disease. Funeral services were held Sunday and the remains were interred at Lamur Cemetery.
J H Thacker and B 8 Johnson returned from a Colorado trip Tuesday morning where Mr Johnson located a 20 acre claim on Government land in the section near Lamar. They report Dan Faith and Ad Johnson, who located out there last year, as doing well. If you have received notice that your subscription is due please let us hear from you.
The Ladies Aid Society of the M E Church will sell ice cream cake and candy at The News office next Saturday starting at 10 a m A wash tub under a rain spout is useless and should be filled with the well at the corner of Main and Grand removed for public convenience.
The Senior and Junior Classes will present a five act dramatization of George Elliott Mil iotts Silas Marner at the opera house next Friday evening under school direction. The plot follows the cloth weaver Silas Marner through misfortune to a reclusive life until a found child and renewed hope change his path. Musical features will accompany the performance.
At the adjourned Saturday night meeting the city council organized for the coming term. New officials include Mayor L. Hayzlett, Treasurer John N. Marsh, Collector Jay Good, Police Judge C. H. Masters, Marshal W.S. Tabler, and Councilmen W.C. Thomas T. J. Hammond first ward Bert Webb KK L Crawford second ward. Dave Holmes reappointed City Clerk and W. S. Simmons named Street Commissioner. Committees chosen: Finance W C Thomas Bert Webb. Streets and Fights I L Crawford T H Hammond.
Dr. C. W. Strode, veterinarian and Kansas City Veterinary School graduate, has located in Jasper after moving from Fort Scott, Kansas. He is described as a young man of pleasing address and friendly manner and is expected to succeed in his new community.
Word from Carthage Hospital says Mrs Omer Webb is rapidly recovering from a serious operation for a tumor. Friends and neighbors will be glad to hear the improvement and send best wishes for her speedy return home.
