Smallpox Strikes Adams Family Nine Miles Southeast
Roy Adams eighteen year old son of A. M. Adams and his wife living nine miles southeast of Jasper returned from Carthage where he attends school with a well developed case of smallpox. The seven child family had not had smallpox or vaccination prior. Dr Knott reports Roy not very sick and progressing. Family vaccinated this week and placed under quarantine.

George Peisen Returns From Eldora After Mother's Death
George Peisen came home Tuesday from Eldora Iowa where he was called by the illness of his ailing mother. His mother passed away last Friday after about two months of illness. Rev James Rider of Carthage will preach at Zion Church east of Jasper next Sunday morning and evening. Mr Rider has not been in the area for some time and friends will be glad to see him.

Rexall Corner Installs Advanced Soda Fountain at Store
H. FB. Pitts has installed a new soda fountain at the Rexall Corner and, in the same week, upgraded the Rexall Store to a modern drug store. The building was enlarged, a brick front added, plate glass show windows, and a water and electric light plant installed. Charley Kitterman, a soft drink expert, now presides at the fountain.

The Ladies Aid Society of the Presbyterian Church met with Mrs C A Covert last Thursday and reorganized. Doctor Bitten by Dog at Mrs Steiner’s Home
Dr. J. J. Martin was badly bitten through the right hand by a dog at the home of 8. D. Steiner last Thursday while making a house call to Mrs. Steiner who has been ill for a month. The dog bite caused a shock lasting two to three days and the wound is healing.

Nephew of A B Saltzman Dies in France Fighting
A B Saltzman learned last week of his nephew John Saltz’s death on the battle line in France. The young man served as a machine gun operator in the British Army after completing three years of enlistment in the U S Army and later joining Canadian service with other Americans.

Road repair planned by Jasper area farmers
The Commercial Club executive board met farmers west of the Jasper bridge to repair a 60 yard stretch of road impassable all winter. Stark, Preston Township County Commissioner, oversaw work with hay, rock, gravel and grading. Local workers included Bert Webb, W.C. Thomas, C. L. Hayvlett, L. I. McCune, H. C. Cordz, R. The Junior Jasper Carthage Jefferson Highway Club unites women and children to promote highway beautification from Jasper to Carthage. Dr Lear Dies on Call at Jasper Area Farm
Dr F F Lear a well known veterinarian died suddenly while on a professional call at Jake Sunderlands south east of Jasper Monday about 10 30 He had just arrived and overexerted himself then rested and collapsed Dr Lear who lived seven years in the area was widely known for his genial disposition and generous nature He was born March 1 1536 in Marion County Mo and married Susan A McGrew in 1874 to whom six children were born Surviving are W J Lear Carthage Mrs W T Mashburn Humansville Anderson Lear Webb City and Louis Lear at the family home The funeral was held at the family home and interment at Brethren Cemetery with Dr Martin of the M E Church officiating A number of friends from nearby towns attended

Dr Martin Speaks on Prison Life at Local Church
Dr J Martin delivered a lecture on Prison Life at the M and Church Spot Friday night. Despite a small audience the talk was pleasing and instructive. Martin drew on four years as chaplain of the Missouri Penitentiary to offer close range insight into the institution and its inmates.
Lamar Club Hosts Jasper Men On Credit Rating Plan
Secretary Bert Webb and W C Thomas and H Cards of the Commercial Club attended a Lamar Commercial Club meeting Monday night. The Jasper men were invited to Lamar to assist in installing a credit rating system for local business men.
