A community campaign runs from April 4 to July 3, 1917 offering a Mason Pony Campaign where a Shetland Pony Outfit is awarded to the most energetic child under sixteen. Votes are earned via purchases and coupons. ties share $300, with no entry cost.
A fire broke out last Thursday noon in the roof of Mrs Lear's home on East Grandave. A crowd gathered within minutes and firefighters contained the blaze with little damage reported.
An eleventh hour ticket led by J. T. McCune won the mayoral race over J. A. Wine at a citizen meeting. McCune tallied 87 votes in the west ward and 2 in the east, Wine 16 in the west and 15 in the east, with officers chosen for police judge marshal collector treasurer and council positions in both wards. Correspondents are asked to mail letters by Monday to reach the office that evening.

Joe Rice and C H Lilly form a partnership to run the garage and automobile agency at the previous Rice site. They move the frame building back 65 feet and erect a brick front 3 by 03 feet, creating a roomy space of by 155 feet with a concrete floor. They will add the Overland agency formerly run by Mr Lilly to the business.
Isaac Lauderbaugh a prominent farmer living near Preston nine miles northwest of Carthage died at his home at 4 oclock Tuesday afternoon after weeks of illness from heart leakage and a stomach cancer He was 75 born January 16 1942 in Columbia County Pa He came to Jasper county forty six years ago married Mary Fowler December 20 1865 and moved to Illinois then Jasper county later He joined the Presbyterian church 36 years ago and served as an elder His wife and five children survive Will Lauderbaugh Mrs Emma Clark Mrs Mamie Frost and I L Lauderbaugh of Jasper and Mrs Magpie Byers of Preston Funeral arrangements will be set after word from distant relatives.
Mrs. Charlotte S. Joiner aged 75 died last Thursday afternoon at her daughter's home two miles south of Jasper after paralysis. Born January 20, 1844, she married M I Joiner in 1866 at Willow Springs Kansas. Survived by many children and 27 grandchildren, with services at First Baptist Church Joplin. Elmer Joiner and A Mendel Drake noted in obituary.
John Hartley and his young daughter reside east of Lamar and spent the weekend visiting friends here. Hartley had been ill for two or three weeks before the trip.
