Pie Supper A Jasper High School Event Friday Night

The Senior Class of Jasper High School will host a pie supper at the schoolhouse this Friday night April 4. They invite all the young folks to attend and enjoy a good evening together.

Keep the Chickens Up in City Ordinance

A city ordinance requires keeping up chickens from April 1 to September. It warns residents that complaints about free ranging birds damaging gardens may fall on them if chickens run loose and are not kept in check.

Steer Handling Accident Injures Local Youth

Last Saturday at the Sanford place east of Jasper Ir Houser and Jay Sanford prepared to throw a steer to cut a lump from its jaw when Jay’s right thumb was caught between the rope and a post. The thumb was twisted and mashed from the hand except the ligaments inside. The injury is very unfortunate and painful but the young man is recovering well.

Daddy of the News Here Lynn Monroe Reunites with Jasper Friends

Lynn Monroe, longtime Carthage press man and founder of the Jasper News, visited Jasper routes and old colleagues after moving to Montrose Colorado. He recalled establishing the Jasper News in 1898 with a borrowed mortgage and his early newspaper days. Monroe now publishes the Montrose Daily Enterprise and owns a plant valued at about 15000 dollars. He was in town due to his brother’s recent death and was greeted by friends and family including his Navy son and younger son enrolled in training corps during wartime.

City Election Sparks Mixed Reactions and Local Wins

After a lively Tuesday, candidates faced shifting support as the Citizens ticket clashed with incumbents for mayor marshal police judge and west ward council seat. Crandall Raings Simmons Embree won west ward council, Good reelected city collector, Selsor treasurer, and tax levy for schools carried. Clyde Rains found a blue sized vest discarded near the schoolhouse, suggesting theft after recent repairs.

Death of W. E. Deardorff Deepens Jasper Loss

W. E. Deardorff, lifelong Jasper resident of 21 years, dies March 26 1911 aged 72. Born Bedford County Virginia December 7 1838 he married Ann Eliza Smith in 1860 and fathered 12 children. Survived by his wife five children 17 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild plus a sister. A deacon of the local church he moved from Missouri and Oklahoma before settling in Jasper two years before his death. Funeral held March 28 at Jasper Baptist Church with Rev Morel Medenoris officiating.

Three Jasper youths take a flight in Carthage exhibit

Ernest Crawford and Orman Schooler rode in a traveling air machine with Lieut. Philip Waters, brother of Jasper’s Harry Waters, paying $11 per trip. Both families and other Carthage residents joined the airborne ride as Harry Waters also flew with his brother.

The Good Kind Calf Shipped to Iowa Dairy Trade

Fred Follmer shipped a two month old registered Holstein male calf to Iowa last week and received ten dollars. The calf’s mother is two years old and yields forty pounds of milk daily. The piece notes the calf’s value is recognized in Iowa dairy sections and remarks Jasper County will grow as a dairy area, despite resistance from older residents. John Curtis and wife and Miss Martha of Carthage visited Jasper Friday.

Lebanon Sunday School Reorganized for Sunday Mornings

The Lebanon Sunday School has been reorganized and will meet every Sunday morning at 10 o'clock FE. 1). Boyd is superintendent. The invitation is to everybody who will come.
