D L Forsythe and wife of Huntsville Ohio arrived at C S Johnston’s home in Zion neighborhood after spending winter in Hot Springs Arkansas. Mrs Forsythe is Johnston’s sister.
Miss Hazel Fances Swank daughter of Mrs. Sarah Swank Jas per weds George William Kirkwood Sapulpa Okla. Saturday March 22 at the Carthage Courthouse in a ceremony by county treasurer Mev 8. 8S Nix. Kirkwood recently discharged from the Army at Camp Logan Texas. He will relocate to Sapulpa with his bride where he works in the oil fields.
Mrs. Fred Gardner gave her son Merrill carbolic acid by mistake Monday night thinking it was cough medicine. The boy fell gravely ill but doctors expect a full recovery. Mrs. Gardner nearly collapsed from the shock of the error.
A memorial committee in Jasper County plans a prominent structure at the county seat to honor men from the eastern district who served in the war. Plans were shown in Judge Halliburton's office. The committee seeks service records from families since exemption records and Washington data are hard to obtain. Families are urged to complete blanks or provide information for permanent archival use.
The citizens meeting for nominating city officials drew few attendees due to late newspaper publication. The ticket includes J. E. Mull for mayor, Jay Good for collector, W. H. Warmmond police judge, W. Hi. Hager marshal, W. T. Simmons and C. L. Embree councilmen from the east ward, replacing Rand and Nunnelly. Dre Houser seat to rear ward, Crandall to succeed. School directors Knott and Hayzlett were nominated. Rumors of a rival ticket circulate.
John Marsh, former Carthage resident, accepts the assistant cashier post at Bank of Carthage to replace Sidney Knight who resigned to enter insurance. Marsh now works at First National Bank in Joplin and has prior ties to Farmers and Merchants Bank in Jasper and Central National Bank. He plans to move his family to Carthage once a residence is secured.
Mesdames J. W. Moore and L. Ty. McCune hosted the Uthai Society last Sunday afternoon. Contests awarded first prize to Mra. Etella Magera and consolation to Mra. Hoy Wells. Dainty refreshments were served at the St. Patrick chemb with guests Mrs. Jay Good and Mrs. A. F. Drake.
In France, EB Karls of Jasper reports his son Sergeant Raymond M Karls was killed in action July 14 1918. A French government citation via the U S War Department honors him for bravery during a direct bombardment while wounded and remaining at his post before dying. He served under Major Giarrett in the Rainebow Division signal corps as color sergeant then outpost duty.
W. E. Deardorff, longtime Dusper resident, died Wednesday morning after several weeks of illness. Abscess on the lung was the immediate cause. Survived by wife and five children, including Love Deardorff of Montana and Mrs. C. Vs. Lilly. The death notice is incomplete as funeral arrangements had not been finalized.
A lively note on small garden plots and early produce with readers planting lettuce onions potatoes corn and cabbage awaiting warmer weather. It mentions straw hats in the streets and neighbors Mr Stonehocker Shark Crawford Ivank Waltons fishing with modest luck and a Mrs Drake catfish tale.
The ladies of the Baptist Church of Jasper announce a bazaar on April 5 and say to watch for further notices next week for more details.
