The Flare will mail to paid subscribers for the first time and local signups are encouraged. Wadsworth boys will visit households with receipt books, and signups are 50 cents a year with copies at Jal News Stand Our Drug and City Drug for 2 cents each.

Parents Study Innovations In School Plan

The P T A held its first meeting of the year with a program to acquaint parents with the Jal school system. Superintendent Burke and principals Gammill and Walker spoke on curriculum improvements and parent roles. A son and two school songs marked the event as meetings were reduced to three for the year.

Rotarians Hear Of Groceries And Grape Culture

Randy Johnston spoke on grape culture at the Rotary Club while J L Robinson discussed grocery business growth in recent years. It was part of the club’s vocational talks series. The club also planned sponsoring the local Boy Scout troop.

Harper Opens New Grocery Store in Harper Building

W F Harper owner of Harper Apartments opened a new grocery store this week featuring everyday low prices. The shop sits in the Harper Building across East Main Street from the Post Office with a clean stock of merchandise.

Jal Volunteer Fire Dept Dance Celebrates New Western Equipment

Jal Volunteer Fire Department prepares for a town dance Saturday night to debut its new Ford pumper. Firemen from nearby towns will inspect the rig and join the celebration, with Ned Bradley and his orchestra from Lubbock providing music at 9 p m in the high school auditorium. Admission is 1 50 per couple, announced by Fire Chief Brooks Brininstoo.

Mrs O'Brien Injured as Gas Blaze Tears Through Pendleton House

Fire erupted when gasoline fumes from boiling trousers in a bucket touched a stove in the Pendleton residence. Mrs Doc O'Brien sustained slight burns while smothering the fiery bed spread as the new fire truck arrived. wallpaper near the blaze escaped, and the engine extinguished the flames with minor damage.

Two Plead Guilty On Theft Charges in Lovington District Court

Al Fox and Horace Henderson pleaded guilty in Lovington district court this week to tool theft after initially entering not guilty pleas. Deputy Elmer Turner testified, prompting the change to guilty.

Church Roofing Material Ordered To Restore Dormant Bapt ist Church

Rev W H Norris announced that roofing materials have been ordered to complete the Baptist church stalled by construction delays. The project aims to protect the interior from weather and finalize the structure. Fred Cooper and family travel to San Angelo the coast Louisiana and Atlanta for the Church of God general assembly. Mrs Doran visited Hobbs to see her sons returning Sunday night. Mr and Mrs Ralph Leslie and friends fished El Dorado this week. Mr and Mrs Fowler Hair spent the weekend in Carlsbad for business and pleasure. Mrs Doran managed the Hair home during the absence.

The Jal Panthers visit Hobbs on Friday in a night game as Hobbs seeks a stronger test after wins over Lovington and Slaton while Jal beat Eunice last week. A large Jal delegation and the Panther band plan to travel to Hobbs.
