Jal Welcomes New Red Fire Engine With Gala Dance

The Jal Volunteer Fire Department plans a Saturday night September 30 celebration in the high school auditorium for the arrival of a new red fire engine delayed by a telegram from the Denver firm. Ned Bradley and his orchestra from Lubbock will provide music while tickets are $1.50 per couple.

James W. McQuerry Succumbs in Jal

James W. McQuerry 66 died Saturday in a Pecos hospital after a short illness. He was buried Monday in Cooper Cemetery following funeral services at the Jal Methodist Church. Survived by six children present at the funeral, he spent most of his life in West Texas and New Mexico and worked as a cowboy and cattleman.

Jiggs Barron won the student council presidency by five votes over Pansy Jeter amid a close race. Port of Registry Nearing Completion at Jal

Construction of a new port of registry at the south edge of Jal is almost finished this week. Ralph Baird is the contractor for the new port of welcome which will be completed in a few days. Mr and Mrs C. H. Sindous of Baird visited with Henry Lambert here last week.

Turner Hudson Escapes Again From Sea Officers

Deputy Sheriff Elmer Turner and partners chased ex convict Turner Hudson as he fled from Hobbs toward Lovington and Portales in a 1938 Ford Coach after a suspected hold up in Clovis. He dodged pursuers, machine gunned his car, and escaped again.

Pharmacist Arlace Ramsey Joins City Drug Store as Manager

Arlace Ramsey returned to Jal this week and is employed at the City Drug Store as manager. He previously left Jal for Wink to work as a pharmacist and returned after Ralph Baird bought the store. Dr W A Myers will have offices in the rear after remodeling. Mrs Randy Johnston visited Artesia this week.

Brothers told mother dead. she is alive in Carlsbad

Richard and Fred Coates rushed to Carlsbad after learning their mother Mrs Will Coates had died. Doctors revived her, and a later call revealed she was alive and much improved, overturning the death report they believed.

New Mexico Voters Reject $1.45 Million State Bonds

In a special election only two counties Roosevelt and Dona Ana supported the proposal while ten voters opposed and one supported. Fewer than 30,000 ballots were cast compared with 160,710 in the 1938 general election.

Burke Speaks on Constitution at DAR Hobbs Meeting

J L Burke Jr addressed the Constitution before the Daughters of the American Revolution at a Hobbs meeting on Constitution Day. The event was hosted at the W G Donley home as a dinner party. Lou Cutshaw plans to stay in Hobbs with her father for the week.

Jal Bowlers Defeat Eunice on Home Court

Jal Bowling Club defeated Eunice on Eunice lanes by 122 pins marking their first win this season on the road. Ray Spear had the high average and won the pot while Mex Harrall took the high score and pot. Jal lineup included Ray Spear Mex Harrall Pee Wee Wheeler Gus Kindrick and John Gaither.

The Rotary Club admitted Walter Pendleton as a new member at a Tuesday luncheon. Malcolm Madera gave a talk on aviation history over thirty years, emphasizing the weather bureau’s role and how it collaborates with aviation to improve safety.

The Ja High School band played at Lea County Fair on Saturday alongside area bands. Dr. Myers moves his office to the apartments behind City Drug Store, purchased by Ralph Baird. Ada Thomas of Botany Oklahoma visits Jal, one of the town's oldtimers who left in 1925.

Football Field Lights Fail During Jal Practice

Jal faced a blackout on Tuesday when football field flood lights failed after the town’s new power line. Emergency engines restored power in about an hour and forty five minutes, delaying night practice but officials say lights will be ready for Friday’s game.

Night Courses Offered at Jal Public School by G B Strunk

Night courses are offered in Jal Public School by G B Strunk for manure art cabinet making wood finishing mechanical drawing blue print reading and metal work. Plans for a new shop were mentioned and interested persons should contact Strunk. Grandma Mosley in Abilene is reported to have a severe heart attack and plans to return home when fit. Frank Justis is treated for eye burns from work at Knight-Madera water works.
