Cattle sales surge as Jal eyes a new oil boom with Texaco ordering 30 wells to be drilled around Jal. Texas Company builds pipelines and finishes tank farm tanks while two gas plants near completion. School enrollment rises with five new entrants this week, totaling 250.
The City Council assigned Jewel Owens to inspect all outdoor toilets for state sanitary compliance. Nonconforming toilets must be rebuilt to meet inspector specifications, with owners directed to obtain specs from lumber yards or council members. Owens will supervise the rebuilding work.
ORPUS CHRISTI describes a peculiar bond between dogs and owners and argues a man must get along with dogs to win owners’ favor. It offers etiquette rules for visiting a dog owner's home, including how to handle an enthusiastic dog with muddy paws. The piece continues on page two.
Hobbs Police Chief Sam Young apologized on behalf of Hobbs residents for unsportsmanlike actions after a game against Jal. Fourteen Hobbs youths were arrested after two cars of Hobbs students allegedly molested the Jal school buses carrying the band and football team home. A rock shattered a Jal bus window and clashes were reported between partisans of both teams.
Two elderly Eunice residents, Mrs J N Carson and W S Marshall, died within three days of each other. Carson, Abilene postmaster, was from Eunice by birth. Marshall, 75, came to the area in 1908. Funeral services for Carson were held in Abilene. Marshall’s services were at the Eunice Methodist Church.
The Jal Rotary Club luncheon featured visitors Rotarians Carl Henderson of Carlsbad Gene Burke president of Hobbs and Rufus Ward. Peter Bish gave a travel talk about the San Francisco Worlds Fair and a Rotary make-up. Johnnie Connell spoke on amateur radio and a past hobby. Attendance reached 91.66 percent aiding a high district ranking after last month’s 83.33.
Mr and Mrs Peter Bish completed a 4000 mile journey visiting the World Fair in San Francisco. They traveled home via Los Angeles, taking several days to enjoy a leisurely vacation along the route.
About 60,000 paid to local ranchers for stock as alfalfa and cattle trucks filled Jal streets. Billy Beckham sold roughly 300 cattle for about 33,000 to Tom Saykers of Reewell. he may retire to Pecos. Bill Danner sold around 375 calves at 9c per lb, roughly 12,000, with others selling smaller lots at about 31.50 per head. Many totals are approximate and most calves may head to Kansas and Iowa feeding lots.
The Ja bowlers met Sunday evening and formed a league. Hunter Hughes was named president Abe Cohn vice president Nita Ree Chitwood secretary and Gus Kendrick treasurer. Plans include a city league with two divisions five man teams and three no teams. Captains will join the council. Members plan to enter bowling contests.
Miss Helen Childers plans to leave Saturday for Washington D C to attend the National postmasters convention. She will be away about three weeks visiting friends and relatives in the east.
Jal led Jal Panthers to a 6 0 victory over Hobbs Beagles in a hard fought game at Hobbs. The score remained 0 0 at halftime as Jal opened the second quarter with a drive ending in a touching down. Hobbs threatened in the late seconds but Jal held the line, securing a 6 0 win and a page four continuation.
Seagraves prepares for a tough road game this week as underdogs against the Jal Panthers who crushed Hobbs last week in the third game of the season.
Three year old Ralph Hirrill son of Mr and Mrs Lee Hirrill of Monument sustained a fractured skull after a horse ran away while he rode it for a picture. Windmills startled the horse causing the animal to bolt and the boy to fall onto a shinnery stump. He was taken to the Community Hospital where emergency care included several stitches to the head. The Campfire Boys plan a Saturday morning meeting to work on a cave one block west of the Methodist Church.
