Owens takes effective September 15 after Chief Green resigns, filling the vacancy left by Dr H B Oakes who moved to Portales. Owens is brother of Sheriff Horace Owens.

Jal residents injured in Wink car crash
Mrs Olie Ely was severely injured with a head wound and chest injury in a Wink wreck. Mr and Mrs George Craig sustained minor cuts and bruises. The trio were returning from Pecos when the collision occurred and Mrs Ely remained hospitalized until Wednesday before leaving for home.

Gulf Well Fire Extinguished After Two Hour Fight
Two hours of fire-fighting by Jal Volunteer Fire Department and Halliburton employees ended a blaze at a Gulf well on the Elliott lease. The fire started from a nearby slush pit and was halted after a water line was cut to supply water. Four hoses were used after the rig was pulled down to reach the flames.

Two Charged With Oilfield Tool Theft
Al Fox and Horace Henderson, both from Jal, were arrested in Kermit for theft of oilfield tools from Barnsdale Oil Company. Deputies Turner and Summers caught them as they left for Odessa. Trial is set for September 25 at Lovington.

Cubs Organize For New Year
The Cub Scouts held a regular session Tuesday to reorganize for the new year. Twenty boys registered with more expected to join. A name change is planned and dues to the international chapter may exclude some potential members. A special meeting is set for next Tuesday at 3 15 p m to plan the new club. They started a new den project under the hill east of town and will meet at 8 a m Saturday to work on it.
