Five teachers added to Jal school faculty

Jal school welcomes five new faculty members across high and grade schools. New hires include Ida Hair Fellers in the high school commercial department and pep squad work, E P Kistler teaching seventh grade, C A Bilson sixth grade, Erma Hon third grade, and Dortha Carl second grade.

Teachers Build East-Facing Homes in Jal

Three Jal teachers Ernie Miller G M Shiplet and Keith Requa are constructing new homes in the southwest part of Jal. Miller shop teacher advised the project and coordinated cooperative work with Shiplet and Requa as they gathered materials and built the three homes facing east. Miller family currently occupies their asbestos-sided house while the others near completion with tile and stucco finishes.

Justis Becomes Taylorcraft Dealer in Jal New Mexico

Justis Torchy Justis was announced as a Taylorcraft dealer for Jal New Mexico starting August 1. He notes Taylorcraft planes hold many world records and sell for 1995 to 2600 dollars with one third down and up to eighteen months to pay. Beginners must complete ten hours of dual and thirty hours solo before private license, with Justis covering the ten hours of dual for buyers. This agency marks Jal's only new business venture.

Lecture on Palomar Telescope Impresses Local School

Robert T. Edgar spoke Friday at 9 a m on the largest telescope in the world on Mount Palomar California. He described the two hundred inch instrument with a thirty foot wide tip a twenty ton mirror and a complex oil padded bearing system. He noted the telescope’s opposite rotation to the earth and the escalator driven camera position and invited listeners to visit Palomar Mountain.

Parents Invited to Visit Local School by Principal

Miss Stella Sullivan, principal, urges parents new to Primary or Elementary grades to visit the school. Teachers will be present to discuss their children’s work and schooling needs.

In the Jal school assembly, Superintendent J L Burke urged students to uphold the rule Be a lady or a gentleman and balance play with work. Principal K B Walker challenged pupils to claim ownership of their school and take responsibility, warning that few would meet a hundred percent standard.

Goodner On Road To Recovery

Richard Goodner co owner of Modern Cleaners has been in critical condition at Temple Hospital for a month but is improving. His wife mother and mother in law visited him and doctors say he may return home in three or four weeks if no complications arise. He is a Jal High School graduate.

Methodist Activities At Jal First Church Ready For Autumn

The First Methodist Church in Jal maintains a full summer program despite vacations and plans to boost autumn social events. Rev. Miller H. Stroup notes Mrs. T. J. Thigpen leads youth activities. Youth Fellowship meets weekly for worship and recreation. Monthly social gatherings resume, with a costume hall outing planned for October. The Woman's Society of Christian Service hosts breakfast meetings. Mrs. E. J. Marshall leads programs. Covered dish suppers resume monthly starting September 28 with Dr. M. L. Sims of Clovis as guest.

Scouts Active With Summer Projects And Trips

Jal Boy Scouts completed several summer projects including building tables and chairs and archery sets at Camp Baca. They hiked ten miles to a mountain summit, spent the night atop it, and returned at eight the next morning. A Carlsbad Caverns trip followed using Mr Pendleton’s bus with beach overnight, breakfast downtown, and an eight thirty cavern tour.

The Girl Scouts held their first meeting of the school year on September 4.
