The Jal Rotary Club announces prizes from New Mexico Electric Service Company for the annual Christmas home decoration contest now in its third year. First prize is a $10 credit, second prize $5 credit. an additional $5 credit goes to the business with the best decorations. Open to all Jal residents with no entry fee. Entries due December 18 to John Connell, judging the week after Christmas.
A man linked to a Sunday night break in at the Strateway Bar was arrested in Odessa this week and turned over to Monahans officers on car theft charges. A stolen Monahans car found abandoned near the bar led investigators to suspect the burglar, who claimed an alibi clearing him of the burglary. Odessa officers said he was released on the car theft count after explaining he could not drive.
Forty two attended a Speakers Club meeting last Thursday for a speechless Thanksgiving party. The event featured an evening of merriment with games as talk was dismissed. The club has seen growing crowds at bi weekly meetings. next gathering is Thursday December 12 at the Methodist Church.
In Lea County the Red Cross drive ends week with fair results and a lower quota than last year due to wartime demands. Jal chairman Mrs. Jimmy Gammill leads volunteers across camps to aid the drive amid local disturbances and growing needs.
The troop announces an annual Father and Son banquet to be held on December 18. Sponsored by mothers the event is open to all fathers and sons in the community with ticket sales starting soon.
Jal's Panthers host KY Yellow Jackets to open the 1940 season in their first gate of the year. Both teams have two weeks of practice and will start a new campaign with strong opposition at home.
A son was born to Dr and Mrs D H Roberts on November 29 in Ennis Texas. Dr Roberts is to return to Jal on Thursday or Friday and the mother and baby will return in a few weeks. Both are reported to be getting along nicely.
Ral ranchers surveyed the range this week and call it the best in many years. Late Fall rains and mild weather have greened the grass, especially in the bottoms, keeping cattle in good shape and sparing them from a harsh winter. Prices at marketing time remain the main concern.
Mrs. D C Buffington is reported recovering after a fall that injured her head and arm. She fell on Tuesday and remained under a doctor's care Thursday.
City Council agreed to sell the old city hall to the Methodist Church to fund a new jail building. Church sought the hall to expand classrooms for growth in its Sunday School. Financial terms are unfinished but the bid was approved in principle.
A morning blaze at a Skelly oil tank battery required eight firefighters to douse the flames with sand. One tank ignited during drainage before cleaning, but wetting down prevented spread while a shovel brigade finished extinguishing the first tank.
The Newico Weekly Oil Report for the week ended November notes nine drilling wells in the Jal area and one new location Rodman No. 1 L Humble State. Lea County declines and a list of wells including Amerada Brewer Continental Krupp Flaherty Olsen Republic Driling and Matrix with depths gas and oil outputs are recorded.
Cities Service this week purchased the lease on the nose of Section 14-25s-36e in the Jal area of Lea County.
