Mont Beckham 68 disappeared after midnight Sunday while telling his wife he would go to Pecos then directing others to head to a ranch before his last communication. Local Jal authorities and family launched a search as an ongoing missing person case drew concern.
The Jal Panthers start their 1939 season with a night game at home against Eunice on September 22. The schedule lists September 29 at Hobbs, October 13 open, October 20 at Artesia, October 27 at Carlsbad, November 3 at Seagraves, November 11 at Lovington, November 17 at Tatum, and November 24 at Fort Springs with night games bolded.
Buck Laddie won the Simmons studio coach awarded in a drawing by City Grocery and Market. A large crowd attended the Saturday event.
Deputy Sheriff Elmer Turner recaptured the car of Turner Hudson, an ex convict who escaped Monahans jail last week, but the suspect fled in another stolen vehicle. Turner was tipped off by the Odessa sheriff as the escape route neared Jal. A late night pursuit ended when the pursuing car sped out of range.
First in a series of band concerts will be played Tuesday evening. R L Meyers, band director, announced the program precedes the Rotary Club banquet to be held at 6 30 p m on the school grounds.

Election officials for the constitutional amendment election on September 16 were announced. Voters will decide on issuing 1,450,000 in bonds to construct and equip state institutions including state college and hospital buildings. Precinct 15, District A, Jal Methodist Church, lists election judges.
The class of 1939 expects most graduates to pursue higher education. Wilma Grock heads to Draughons Business College in Lubbock, while Orval Clayton and Jimmie Sousaree Jr enroll at the University of Texas system. Kathleen McKeown and Louie Pender also head to Texas Tech, plus Homer Phillips to ENMJ C Portales, Charles Post to Texas A&M, and Helen Lind to Draughons. Mrs Olie Ely buys Tom Sullivan’s interest at Star Laundry. Lou Cutshaw to Fort Worth for beauty college.
Two new gasoline plants to be built about half a mile apart three miles north of Jal. El Paso Natural Gas plans a million dollar facility with crews of 25 to 30 and construction crews around 100. Phillips also advancing with a plant on Section 34, about three miles north and two east of town. Pipeline leases secured. El Paso buys gravel for site prep.
First day enrollment at Jal schools reaches 502 with 389 in elementary and 163 in high school. Superintendent J. L. Burke heads a 20 member staff now in Lea County’s Jal system. Teachers listed for high and elementary divisions include principals K. B. Walker and J. R. Gammill, plus numerous subject and grade teachers. Substitute teachers Loretta Walker Mildred McClintock Nina Ruth Gammill are noted.
The third Jal singing event attracted a huge audience Sunday afternoon at the Church of God. A singing school will start September 25 with Rev Bud Warren of Brownwood chosen to lead the program and most funds already subscribed. The next event is set for September 17 at the Baptist Church.
Mre G E Burleson travels to Brownwood this week to spend 80 days visiting her daughter Mrs W A Pierce.

Brooks Brininstool city water superintendent and fire chief will lead a party of Jal boys on Saturday morning. All boys who want to go are to meet at the water office at 10 a.m.
