The 1941 Jal You th Activity Program kickoff will share prospect booklets with Rotary members Tuesday at noon. The year’s total budget is set at 400 with 100 for girls’ activities and 150 for buildings, down from 600 and 250 last year. The community Boy Scout fund will drop from 150 to 100. The drive, led by J. M Whitworth, unites youth work under one plan and budget.
The Winkler County jury sentenced Charles W. Ely Jr to life in prison for the May 17 1939 shooting of Earl Burkett as he attempted to escape. Ely's attorneys filed notice of intention to appeal, with 30 days given to study testimony and evaluate grounds. The trial spanned three days and drew many Jal residents to Monahans.
The Panthers closed a jagged season with a loss to Eunice after a fluctuating slate. A highlight was a 7-6 win against Carlsbad while the low point came last week as Eunice dominated the Panthers.
A daughter named Patricia Kay was born this week to Mr and Mrs B B Malone of Austin The mother Margaret Henry of Jal is listed as the former wife of the late Mr Malone or Mrs Malone.
Ralph E. Adams, brother of Jal mayor A H Adams, commanded the first American made bombers sent to Britain from Canada. A Texas native, he worked for Blevins Aircraft in Atlanta before joining the R A F and flying the initial Atlantic crossing. His Dallas mother received a cable about his safe arrival. He married with wife and children living in Atlanta.
Junior Scott, former Jal Panther football player, has enlisted in the U S Army Air Corps and is assigned to Kelly Field in San Antonio, reflecting a wartime call to service.
Mrs C V Mc Clatchy of Halliburton announces the birth of their daughter Mary Beth at a Hobbs hospital on Sunday. The report notes the new arrival in Jal and identifies the family by name.
The Lakers Club schedules a Thanksgiving party for Thursday after a regu meeting. The Methodist church ladies will serve the church dinner. Five new members were welcomed at the November 14 meeting. Frank Murry was treated in a Kermit hospital for gun shot wounds after a street altercation and has been released as recovered. The incident involved a wound of a type that killed Uncle Bill Scarborough at the Frying Pan Ranch last year. No charges were filed. Mrs. G A Smith visited her sister Mrs enter Eaves Tuesday.
