The Jal paper reports upbeat election jokes amid local chatter. Frank Murry, 2, recovers from a Main Street shooting after intervening in an arrest attempt. he underwent surgery and was moved to Kermit hospital for further treatment.
Lovington travels to Panther Field at 7 30 p m for a Friday night game as Toby Gareer leads a tougher Wildcats offense to avenge last year's Panthers setback. Jal aims to rebound after a 20 0 loss to Hobbs while seeking prestige restoration.
A roundup of deer hunters reports from multiple camps. J M Whitworth shares a six point buck while 13 year old Jack Maib and 14 year old Dan Galloway both boast early successes. Other El Paso Camp and Continental Camp hunters are named among the totals. A wild turkey was bagged by Art Bothe despite not taking a deer.
A second trial for Charles W Ely Jr. of Jal begins in Kermit district court Tuesday with jury selection. Convicted in Monahans last year, the death penalty was reversed and a new trial ordered. Ely, arrested in Winkler County, is held in Pecos jail. Attorney arguments will invoke self defense against oppression per the high court ruling. Judge J A Crane presides as William L Kerr nears retirement.
In Jal precinct a Republican majority backed Willkie with 55 votes while FDR received the remainder. A Democratic committee member defected, saying he would support the President-elect now that the election is over.
John Eddy announced receipt of the State police junior patrol badges this week and that they will be presented after the safety course is completed this weekend. Senior Scouts take the course and will manage traffic around the school once they know the rules.
Anderson and Pritchard this week purchased a lease on the northeast quarter of the northwest quarter of Section 32-24s-37e near production in the Jal area. Mrs. Marie Pickens and her mother Mrs. Haynes went to El Paso this week. La Norfleet spent last week around El Paso.
City councilmen voted to discontinue garbage service after a Monday night meeting. They ordered delinquent bills paid to update the books. The session also discussed a milk ordinance with D. C. Washington seeking higher dairy grades.
The district court of honor for the Boy Scouts met in the Jal high school auditorium with five troops present. Three Jal Scouts earned Life Scout badges and five received merit badges at a ceremony highlighted by the Jal Panther Band and a flag pledge by the participating troops.
