Rotary club hosts first quarterly ladies night with fourteen Rotarians and thirteen ladies. Women share what they saved up on husbands in hobby talks, joking about husbands’ latest stunts. Methodist WMS members serve dinner at the church.
The Jal community weighs forming a rodeo arena with a meeting planned for time and place. Calf roping drew business Saturday while a potential summer rodeo looms. Superintendent Burker sues a challenge to Raton for Panth ers and Jal, with a key championship at stake. Halloween night saw about thirty youths age twelve to eighteen pranking streets, including a skunk in a sack, causing light mischief.
Jal Speaker Club to hold its first formal meeting on November 9 at 7 30 p m in the Methodist Church with a dinner and program. Dean Murray will speak on the Texas Company history and J M Whitworth G R Dunlap and Mrs J D McClintock will also speak.
Seven persons were injured in a head on collision one mile east of Carlsbad after a Jal Carlsbad high school football game. Mr and Mrs Wayne Cheek of Jal were first on the scene and summoned an ambulance. Readings list A L Patterson Monument minor injuries. L V Dyess Denver City fractured jaw and body cuts. R D Henson Denver City cuts on face and body bruises. Lowell Hunt Monument deep body cuts and head injuries. Monice Myrick Alfred Texas concussion and head injuries. Lon McNeil, badly burned in a October 9 explosion at the Madera Knight Water Company works, is recovering in hospital. He sat up, may be dismissed soon, after starting a fire by striking a match in a dark doghouse filled with gas from a slipped stove hose. He fled the flames, jumped into a water tank, and drove four miles to a doctor.
A car driven by W D Bill Dan ner foreman of the Woolworth ranch collided with a T P truck on the highway north of Jal Tuesday evening. Cause of the accident was unknown. No one was injured but the Danner car sustained considerable damage.
Jal Panthers topple Carlsbad Cavemen 7 to 6 to keep hopes alive for a perfect season and a state title. Zahn spearheaded the rally with a long run and a successful extra point. Carlsbad mounted a fourth quarter surge before the final margin.
Charley Webster an employee at the Texaco Service Station on the Highway was badly burned Saturday when attempting to start a fire with gasoline. He dumped gasoline into a stove igniting live coals, his trousers catching fire. He suffered burns from the waist down and on his right hand, was treated at the Community Hospital, and is reported to be improving.
An organization meeting for night school classes for oil field workers will be held at the high school at 7 p m Friday November 10. Mr Kelly of the Hobbs proration office will be in charge. Porkey Meyers son of Mr and Mrs R L Meyers has been ill this week.
City officials received praise for the state of city accounts after J D Hannah assistant state controller reviewed records for City Clerk Woodrow Bailey and Water Superintendent Brin is ten percent penalties on water bills due by the twentieth will be enforced strictly. John Post son of Mrs G W Post injured chest in a fall this week and doctors said the injury was not serious.
Funeral services were held in Colorado City for Porter Mosley a 58 year old officer who was accidentally killed Tuesday afternoon Survivors include his widow the former Georgia Irene Baird sisters and several relatives including Eddie Mae Mosley Winkler County deputy tax assessor collector and Mrs Jewel Hosford Denison plus other daughters and two sisters listed in the notice
Jal coach J A Burke says Jai Pan thers will play Raton anytime but Hobbs is the logical site. Jal has November 17 and 24 open after a 7 6 win over Carlsbad Cavemen. Raton leads northern New Mexico with seven wins and no losses while Jal leads southern New Mexico with five wins and two scores.
Jack Kerley twenty was burned in an oil and tar fire at Eunice while unloading highway surfacing material from a tank car. He was treated at Hobbs General Hospital with burns described as not serious. The blaze damaged a state highway tank truck and other equipment on a Eunice railroad siding. The fire started about 8 am and was extinguished by the Eunice volunteer fire department.
About fifteen Jal men and a few women swung their guns to their shoulders and left early for the hunting grounds on opening day. Jal planners included Mr and Mrs Hunter Hughes Mr and Mrs J M Whitworth J T Dunnien Mr and Mrs R E Stone J H Blackall Bill McColum Bill Smith Mr and Mrs T P Ioody K B Wakter Jimmie Gammill George Baker Bill Whitt and others.
