City urged to take control of garbage work

Civic Club members urged city control of garbage collection and disposal due to haphazard private operation. They plan to ask the City Council to cover operation and require 100 percent collection to curb fire hazards. Geo. Davis Peter Bish and Brooks Brininstool will meet the council to push an enforcing ordinance.

Road to Red Bluff Discussed By Civic Club

Construction of a county road to Red Bluff Lake was discussed at the Civic Club meeting Tuesday night. A committee was named to see the County Commissioners regarding this road. The road would help sportsmen reach the lake via Jal rather than Pecos or the New Mexico end.

Golf Rule Meet Set This Week

Jal Golf Club board will meet this week to complete plans for the course and draft rules for approval. Yardages and score cards will be prepared and ready early next week. L. A. Baird chairs the board and notes ongoing course improvements amid three weeks of use. The Pingers and the Gammills spent the weekend in Lubbock.

Scouters Plan For Summer Camp In Weed

The Boy Scouts troop committee will meet this week to finalize plans for attending summer camp at Weed. Cards were distributed to Scouts and parents detailing requirements for participation. Scoutmaster Johnny Connell urged boys who wish to become scouts to join, with next month designated as registration time. The Jal area notes the New Mexico Electric Company leading a cleanup, painting, roof repair, fencing, grass planting, and new loading rack installations.

Homer Grigry former resident departs for South America to join Texas Company on a three year contract. Mrs A H Adams returns from Dallas trip driving a new Packard.

In Jal area a new wildcat, Continental No 1 A 28 Lynn, flowed 450 barrels per hour from 3,668 feet depth with 3,633 pay, linking pools between Cooper and Lynn. The well is one mile east of Skelly No 1 Combest, with nearby acreage held by Texas & Pacific Conoco Atlantic and Shell.

Juvenile Delinquency Board Seeks Funds for Officer

The Lea County Juvenile Delinquency meeting in Hobbs discussed raising 480 dollars to match 720 dollars Judge James B. McGhee will spend from his district court fund for a full time county juvenile worker. J O Walton urged businessmen to employ boys in summer to keep them busy.

Justis Buys Hazeltine Interest in Local Shop

D. W. Justis announced this week that he bought Hazeltine’s share in the Lea County Welding and Machine Shop and will partner with P. H. Hedges. Justis, a Jal resident, plans to enlarge welding services and expand operations.

Jal High School Baccalaureate and Commencement Planned

School in Jal nears closing with Baccalaureate on Sunday and Commencement Wednesday. Examinations run through Friday. Principal K B Walker orders nonexam students to ride the bus. General assembly sets awards and grade cards. May 25 reserved for teacher parent conferences. Both ceremonies to be held at night.

Stanolind Softball Team Enters Kermit League Opener

The Stanolind softball team has entered the Kermit Amateur Softball League led by manager C. A. Jackson. They will play in Walton Stadium, Kermit, under lights against Wink High School on opening night May 29, as part of an 84 game schedule versus seven teams from Wink and Kermit.

Monahans Officer Killed After Jail Shooting

Earl Burkett nightwatchman dies from a gunshot in Monahans after he arrests C. W. Ely and Glenn Osburn for murder. Ely flees toward Jal, is pursued by Wink merchants police and Deputy Sheriff L. B. Eddins, tires shot out to stop his car. Three other men are detained or sought as a statewide dragnet widens.

Large gas well completed in Langlie area Lea County

Anderson-Prichard Oil Corp completed a major gas well in the Langlie area of southeastern Lea County. No. 1 Woolworth tested at 8,400,000 cubic feet daily through casing, from 3,102 to 3,454 feet in lime. Local residents note travel and visits by Bob Burns and the Smalley family.

Hughes to Open Bowling Alley in Jal Skating Rink Building

Hunter Hughes announced plans to open a ten pin bowling alley in the former Jal Skat Jing Rink building. The facility will host club and team matches with regulation alleys provided.
