Otis Peabody of Life Magazine drew attention to four pages on New Mexico scenic spots in Life, praising the state’s rich visuals and potential tourist draw during Coronado Cuarto Centennial celebrations. The note invites local writers to submit a history of Jal football with by line opportunities.
Jal, 1939 state champions, meets Wink, West Texas regional champions, in Wink to open the 1940 football season. Both teams expect a large crowd after scheduling troubles last season. Key players depart but each squad shows strong prospects for the year.
Bill Carpenter carried the Jal to Hobbs pony express for the airmail celebration starting at Jal at 5 a.m. He delivered 51 letters before departure and signed each one. The four hour ten minute ride crowned him first in the Jal and Tatum race.
Mr and Mrs George Davis hosted a family gathering on Mother's Day. Attendees included J H Medlin Sr Lovington and his children, Tom Marion Kermit Elbert Medlin Bill Hollis Ralph Baird J H Medlin Jr and the hosts.
Thursday was visitation day in second and third grade classes. Pupils explained charm and work to visitors. Room mothers served punch during a display of annual work, with morning and afternoon sessions.
WMS met Tuesday afternoon for a World Outlook program led by Mrs Fowler Hair. Members contributed to the event then hostesses Mrs J M Haid and Mrs J R Boyd served ice cream and cake.
Louis Veith was gurned on the Sheriff of Lea county at Ington this week on charge of forgery by Peter Bish justice of peace. He was tried in district court and was sentenced from one to two years in the penitentiary.
Mr and Mrs Gaylord Baker welcomed twins on Wednesday and were sworn in as parents. The couple reported the newborns are thriving and getting along well.
Mrs R L Meyers hosted the Just a Mere Contract Bridge Club Monday evening. High score went to Mrs K B Walker, second to Mrs Benton, traveling prize to Mrs Bill Fink, and outing prize to Mrs Jimmie Gammill. Others included Mesdames Clarence Roach Bill Hollis J L Burke. Next meeting set at Mrs Finks home.
Helen Childers returned from the state postmasters convention in Tucumcari where she was elected third vice president of the United Postal Employes. She also serves as chairman of Lea county for the national postmasters association. Senator Chavez and Keynater attended from Washington for the event.
A singing convention will be held Sunday at the Baptist Church with M L Dooley reporting. Singers from Lea county and nearby Texas counties are expected to attend the event which will begin about 2 p.m.
Mrs Keever will leave for Big Spring to meet her daughter Mary. They will travel to Mineral Wells for a two week health resort stay. Afterward Mrs Keever returns while Mary proceeds to Mexico City to enroll at the University and study Spanish.
A week of school picnics closes the year with second grade visiting the Winters site on Wednesday and first grade earlier in the week. The events were sponsored by Miss Rowena Hulse and the room mothers Mesdames Frank Justice Garland Ramsey Brooks Brinin stool and Carew. A third grade picnic is planned for Thursday. Mr and Mrs Tommie Thompson of Kermit visited Jal on Wednesday.
Mrs A B Bradford traveled to Hobbs on Wednesday to conduct her business matters.
Seniors at Jal High School begin commencement Sunday at 11 a.m. with Rev. G L Keever delivering the baccalaureate sermon in the school auditorium. Commencement exercises follow Wednesday at 8 p.m. with Col Deke Pearson, superintendent of NMMS in Roswell, giving the address.
Lea county Democratic chairman James M. Murray announced a county convention at the Hobbs American Legion auditorium on May 24 at 10 a m. Delegates will be chosen for the Democratic state convention in Santa Fe on June 27. precinct chairs were directed to hold May 16 meetings to ensure county representation.
Rotarians met for lunch on Tuesday and heard Homer Pender give a thumbnail sketch of his life. Visitors included Fay Pribble Hobbs Carl Henderson Carlsbad and Bunny Flint Lovington with Dr Puckett county health officer Carlsbad and Dr F R Banfield attending.
This week several new families relocated to take jobs at the new gasoline plant. Among those moving in was Mr. and Mrs. F. T. Bailey of El Paso who will be employed at the plant, transferred by the El Paso Natural Gas Company.
Church notes urge all to attend Sunday School and a 11 a m service at the school with G. L. Keever as pastor for the baccalaureate ceremony.
