New City Hall Sought By Council

The city council swore in new members led by Mayor A. H. Adams and councilmen Wm. J. G. Fink J. M. Whitworth L. J. Calley and John G Benton. John Benton joined the group, others having served before. They voted to advertise for bids on the current City Hall and lots to funds a new city hall and jail on a new site. Woodrow Bailey remained city clerk.

Junior-Senior Banquet Is Western Affair

The Junior Senior banquet will be held Friday night at the Methodist Church with Western style and a rodeo theme. Afterward they will retire to the Odd Fellows Hall to dance, marking Jal’s first junior senior prom.

Postoffice Opens At Bennett

The Bennett postoffice opened Monday with Mrs. Marshall as postmaster after a local movement in the small town near El Paso Camp. Among several applicants for the fourth class office, Mrs. Marshall received the appointment.

Mr and Mrs Merle McCoy returned to Jal from Odessa this week after about a year and a half away. They moved their house into Jal upon returning.

Rumors say El Paso Natural Gas will build a carbon black plant in Jal before summer’s end. Stanolind may add a gasoline plant and a potash mine is hoped to open. Merchants feel despondent amid slow drilling, but pending deals and next week’s announcements promise changes.

Panther Band Honored At Banquet For Good Work

The Panther Band was honored Saturday night with a banquet at the Methodist Church hosted by the band mothers organization. About eighty band members and guests attended the dance at Odd Fellows Hall after the banquet. Awards were given including a merit pin to Iva Lee Caulley for best all around member and pins to Joanne McKey and Elton Blackwell for improvement and versatility. R L Meyers, band director, presented the awards as school principals K B Walker and Jimmie Gammell spoke brief remarks.

Revival at Church of God to Begin Sunday

A revival will start Sunday night at the Church of God led by state evangelist George Sauveshanka. He has taught many singing schools and plans to conduct a singing school here after the revival.

Wink Odd Fellows Initiate Six New Members From Jal

The Wink lodge in Jal New Mexico initiated six candidates during a Tuesday night meeting with T M Connor Past Grand presiding. After the ceremony twenty five members and guests from Pecos Jal and Wink were served refreshments. Frank Goodner returned from Albuquerque where he had been receiving treatments.

Seniors as Rotary guests at Jal luncheon

Rotarians met at their regular luncheon with the Senior Class of Jal High School as guests. Rev. Denton Woods of Hobbs visited and spoke to the seniors on self discipline and character. Also visiting were Hobbs Rotarians Kevin Aldridge Gene Burke Willie Weir and Herman Dobinson Lovington. Visitors Dion George of Clovis and Bud Bennett of Hobbs attended.

Gomez Boy Drowns In Canal

The six year old son of B. Gomez a farm worker up the canal from Grandfalls disappeared Sunday night and was found drowned Monday noon in the main irrigation ditch four miles south of the entry point. An all night search failed to locate him until the drifted body was found under debris near Grandfalls.

Line foreman Joe Crum aids installation of transformer

Line foreman Joe Earl Crum of Hobbes with New Mexico Electric Service Company assisted this week in installing a new transformer. He recently returned from Oklahoma City where he flew the Cub coupe plane belonging to the company.
